Headlee hired as Waynesburg University wrestling coach
Ron Headlee has been hired as the head wrestling coach at Waynesburg University and will assume the duties after next weekend’s NCAA Midwest Regionals. John Yates was also hired as Headlee’s assistant. Both coaches bring a wealth of experience to the Yellow Jackets.
Headlee coached Jefferson-Morgan to a 111-25-1 record from 1988-97, winning five WPIAL titles. He also coached 24 WPIAL individual champions, 15 state place-winners, and seven PIAA champions. Headlee was also an assistant as the junior high and assistant varsity coach at Waynesburg Central.
A graduate of Messiah College, Headlee is a member of the school’s Hall of Fame after finishing with a 101-16-1 record and earning All-American honors as a senior.
“My two high school coaches, Joe Ayersman and Ralph Adamson, were alumni of Waynesburg, and I feel privileged to get the opportunity to keep a great tradition going,” said Headlee. “I am fortunate to bring with me a great assistant in John Yates, whom I feel will be a great asset to the Waynesburg program.”
Yates finished with a 140-43 record in his 10-year career as head coach at Waynesburg Central. During that time, Yates coached 15 WPIAL individual champions, 20 state place-winners, and six PIAA champions.
A graduate of Pittsburgh, Yates had a four-year career with the Panthers.
