Basketball Spurs get Kurt Thomas
SAN ANTONIO (AP) – The San Antonio Spurs acquired veteran forward Kurt Thomas from the Seattle SuperSonics on Wednesday night in exchange for guard Brent Barry, center Francisco Elson and a 2009 first-round draft pick.
The 6-foot-9 Thomas, in his 13th NBA season, gives the Spurs much-needed size to complement Tim Duncan. In 42 games with the SuperSonics, Thomas averaged 7.5 points and 8.8 rebounds.
Paul spoils Kidd’s Dallas debut
NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Chris Paul had 31 points, 11 assist and a career-high nine steals, spoiling Jason Kidd’s debut with Dallas and lifting the New Orleans Hornets to a 104-93 victory over the Mavericks on Wednesday night.
Kidd, acquired Monday from New Jersey, looked out of sorts at times, committing six turnovers.
James posts triple-double
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – LeBron James had his second consecutive triple-double, with 31 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists, and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Indiana Pacers 106-97 on Wednesday night.
It was James’ sixth triple-double of the season and the 16th of his career, and it helped the Cavaliers end a two-game losing streak.
WVU loses to Villanova
VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) – Dwayne Anderson scored 17 points, Corey Stokes added a career-high 16 and Villanova snapped a three-game losing streak against West Virginia with a 78-56 victory on Wednesday night.
Joe Alexander and Joe Mazzulla each scored 11 points, and DaSean Butler added 10 for the Mountaineers (18-8, 7-6), whose two-game winning streak ended.
Memphis remains undefeated
NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 29 points to lead No. 1 Memphis to a 97-71 victory over Tulane on Wednesday night, giving coach John Calipari his 400th victory.
The win, coupled with second-ranked Tennessee’s 89-70 victory against Auburn, sets up a showdown Saturday between the two top-ranked teams in the country. It will be the first 1-2 meeting since No. 2 Ohio State beat No. 1 Wisconsin 49-48 on Feb. 25, 2007.

Packers franchise Williams
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – The Green Bay Packers designated defensive tackle Corey Williams as their franchise player Wednesday, preventing him from becoming an unrestricted free agent.
Green Bay also cut veteran tight end Bubba Franks.
Louisville player dismissed
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Louisville coach Steve Kragthorpe has dismissed cornerback Rod Council from the team following Council’s arrest early Wednesday morning.
Council, who had one year of eligibility remaining, had 32 tackles and two interceptions last year for the Cardinals.

Flyers lose Gagne for season
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Simon Gagne appears to be done for the season.
The Flyers forward was told Wednesday to sit out the rest of the year because of lingering symptoms of three concussions suffered this season.
Islanders win fifth straight
WASHINGTON (AP) – Mike Comrie scored the only goal of the shootout, and the New York Islanders pushed their winning streak to a season-high five games Wednesday night with a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals.
