Bryson is 171-pound champ as AG finishes second in tournament

Lance Bryson was named Most Outstanding Wrestler and picked up a first place win at 171 as Albert Gallatin placed second overall in the Winner’s Choice Tournament Saturday. Of the 32 teams, the Colonials finished with 207 points behind first-place finisher Parkersburg.

Teammate Jeremiah Karpency also finished in first place at the 215 class.

Tyler Haines (103) and Matt Lowry (135) finished in third place, while Patrick Palmer (140) and Jeff Dulaney (160) finished in second place.

John Thomas (119) and Cody Mitchell (153) finished in sixth place, followed by Jacob Lowry (112) and Chris Milligan (130) in seventh place.

Boys basketball

Highlands 82, Connellsville 67 – Reece Maberry tossed in a game-high 28 points, including four from 3-point land, as Highlands defeated Connellsville in non-section action Saturday.

Teammate Damon Porter was next in the scoring column with 27 points, including 6-of-7 from the line.

Jeff Sinclair also eclipsed the double-digit plateau with 10 points.

A trio of Connellsville players scored in double figures, highlighted by Johnny Dilworth’s 27 points.

Mason Leos and Robbie Egan added 14 and 11 points respectively.

The Falcons are back in action Tuesday night against Latrobe.

North Catholic 58, Laurel Highlands 52 – Matt Long netted a game-high 19 points, including an impressive 8-of-9 outing from the foul line, as North Catholic defeated host Laurel Highlands in non-section play.

Jesse Long and Joe Long added 12 and 11 points.

Isaiah Dawson led the Mustangs with 11 points.

Laurel Highlands senior Kaleb Ramsey left the game at the 2:25 mark in the second quarter with an ankle injury. He scored six points in the first quarter and led the Mustangs with five rebounds.

Overall, North Catholic led in the rebounding category holding a slim 19-17 edge.

With 3:29 remaining in the game, LH’s Ronnie Fudala tied the game at 49, but North Catholic peeled off seven straight points.

Laurel Highlands (8-7) hosts Elizabeth-Forward Tuesday in non-section play.

Men’s basketball

East Stroudsburg 83, California (Pa.) 71 – Senior guard Theron Colao led California with 16 points but the Vulcans fell short as East Stroudsburg never gave up the lead winning Saturday, at Hamer Hall.

East Stroudsburg’s Channon Easley scored team-and game-high 22 points, while Andy Heimbach added 20 for the Warriors. Easley also collected eight boards, while the Warriors out rebounded the Vulcans 35-31.

In the first half, California tied the game three times before the Warriors pulled ahead to as many as eight. California then cut the Warrior lead to one just before the end of the first half.

In the second half, East Stroudsburg pulled away with two double figure

leads that the Vulcans cut down to two possession situations both times.

California returns to action Sunday when they take on Kutztown at Hamer

Hall. Tip off is set for 3 p.m.

Women’s basketball

California (Pa.) 84, East Stroudsburg 50 – Brooque Williams scored 22 points and added five steals to lead the California women’s basketball team to a victory over East Stroudsburg Saturday at Hamer Hall.

Kayla Smith added 21 points and eight rebounds for the Vulcans.

California had five players in double figures.

For the fourth game in a row, Williams led the Vulcans in scoring. In each of those games she scored more than 20 points. She has also continued her streak of steals and now needs only seven to move into ninth place on the single season chart.

In the first half, the Vulcans led by as many as 17 but after a 18-4 run, covering the last five minutes, East Stroudsburg cut the lead at halftime to three.

The Vulcans out rebounded the Warriors 48-31. The biggest margin came on the offensive glass with the Vulcans only allowing East Stroudsburg to gain only seven second chance opportunities while grabbing 25 offensive boards.

California also committed only 17 turnovers while forcing 21 steals. The Vulcans return to action Sunday at 1 pm against Kutztown. This is the last game before conference play begins Jan. 19, when the Vulcans host Clarion at 1 p.m.
