Smith’s double-double lifts Cal U women over Kutztown
Kayla Smith scored a team-high 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead California University of Pa. past visiting Kutztown, 71-62, in non-conference play Sunday afternoon at Hamer Hall. The Vulcans (13-2) also got superb scoring performances, with Brooque Williams finishing with 18 and Crystal Andrews adding 16 to help preserve the win. Williams added nine rebounds on the day, and Andrews dished out a game-high eight assists. Lindsay Johnson yanked down a game-high 11 rebounds for Cal.
Kutztown was led by Rachel Weidensaul’s game-high 20 points.
Men’s basketball
Kutztown 80, California (Pa.) 79 – The Vulcans dropped an overtime heartbreaker to the Bears in non-conference action.
California lost a 35-32 lead at halftime, ending up tied with Kutztown 73-73 at the end of regulation. The Bears were able to edge their hosts in overtime, 7-6, to grab the win.
Though it came in a loss, the Vulcans (9-5) had five different players score in double figures with Ron Banks leading the way with a team-best 20 points. Theron Colao chipped in 14, Connellsville grad James Hairston put up 12, Joe Berenato contributed 11 and Alioune Mbaye had 10. Mbaye also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Banks yanked down nine boards.
Kutztown was led by Stephen Dennis, who poured in a game-high 24 points.
