Mikes edge Maples on Lapkowicz buzzer-beater Joby Lapkowicz scored two of his four points on a buzzer-beater as Carmichaels edged Mapletown 41-39 in Section 2-A boys basketball action Friday.
With the game deadlocked at 39, Lapkowicz scored despite a swarming Mapletown defense to seal the Mikes’ ninth-straight win.
Teammate Ian McCombs eclipsed the double-digit plateau with a game-high 14 points, followed by Jeremy Ganocy’s 13, including one from beyond the 3-point arc.
Carmichaels scored on 19 field goals and were 2-of-8 from the line.
Ethan Kovach paced Mapletown with 12 points, followed by Warren Dickerson’s nine.
Mapletown looks to bounce back at Geibel Catholic on Tuesday.
Carmichaels betters its record to 6-1 in the section and 14-3 overall. A home game against Chartiers-Houston on Tuesday is next up on the schedule.
Connellsville 64, Kiski Area 59 – Connellsville used a 21-point effort from Johnny Dilworth to defeat Kiski Area in a Section 1-AAAA contest Friday night at Kiski.
Scotty Hartz joined Dilworth in double figures, as he dropped in 12 points for the Falcons.
Kiski’s Brady Pacific led all scorers with 28 points, including five 3-pointers. He was also a perfect 3-3 from the foul line.
Trailing 15-9 heading into the second quarter, the Falcons scored 21 points in the second, and went into halftime leading Kiski 30-23.
Connellsville won the third quarter 14-10 to take a 44-33 going into the fourth quarter, but Kiski responded with a 26-20 fourth quarter to make the game respectable.
Next up for Connellsville will be Franklin Regional on Tuesday in a Section 1-AAAA contest. Kiski will host Altoona on Tuesday in a non-section contest.
California 66, West Greene 30 – Donte Valentino lit up the scoreboard with a team-high 20 points, as California rolled past West Greene in Section 2-A action.
Teammate Ben Carson was next in the scoring column with 14 points.
Both Valentino and Carson tossed in two 3-pointers, as did Jordan Michaux who scored six points.
West Greene’s Aaron Gifford led all scorers with 23 points.
The Trojans (11-4, 6-0) look to keep their undefeated streak alive Tuesday at Carmichaels.
Derry 42, Southmoreland 31 – Matt Maloy netted 10 points, including a three-pointer, en route to a win over host Southmoreland.
The deciding factor in this Section 3-AAA contest was the points scored at the foul line.
Derry shot 15-of-20, but the Scotties were sent to the line only 3 times and converted one point.
Andrew Sikora led Southmoreland with a game-high 12 points, while Adam McKlven added six.
The Scotties (0-6, 3-14) are looking to put one in the win column against host Laurel Highlands on Tuesday.
The Mustangs are coming off a 64-61 loss to Greensburg Salem.
Serra Catholic 101, Frazier 53 – Pat Grubbs tossed in 21 points and Anthony Etolito gunned in 20 to lead Serra Catholic to victory over Frazier in Section 3-A action.
Etolito gunned in four two pointers and four treys for his total as T.J. Heatherington, Alex Matta and Rob Heatherington rounded out a quintet to twin-figure scorers with 14, 12 and 11 points respectively.
Matt Keebler and Frank Bartolomucci paced the Commodores with 16 and 14 points respectively.
Serra (9-0, 15-1) remains undefeated in section play, while Frazier (0-8, 2-18) is still looking for its first section victory.
Belle Vernon 56, West Mifflin 51 – Four Belle Vernon players scored in double-figures, highlighted by Jacob Dudzinski’s 15, as Belle Vernon defeated host West Mifflin in a Section 5-AAA match-up.
John Naylor was next in the scoring column with 13 points, including three from 3-point land.
Bo Lustig also contributed to the double-digit scoring with 11 points, and Josh Pohlot posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Leopards held West Mifflin to just three points in the third period, and held of a 29-point surge by the Titans in the fourth.
Chris Hester was the bright point on the West Mifflin roster with 13 points, followed by Rocky and Rashad Washington, with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Belle Vernon (13-5, 5-1) hosts Steel Valley on Tuesday.
The Titans fall to 3-3 in the section and 8-8 overall.
Brownsville 69, Waynesburg Central 43 – Andrew Roberts and Gary Brooks each tossed in 19 points, en route to an easy Section 5-AA win over host Waynesburg Central.
Teammate Greg Allamon put on a 3-point clinic with five for a total of 15 points, while Evan Chafin had two of his own for a total of 10 points.
The Falcons scored on 27 field goals and were 8-of-22 from the line.
Sean Fancher paced the Raiders with nine points, all of which came from beyond the 3-point arc.
Waynesburg falls to 3-12.
