Erika Chory leads Lady Maples to victory Erika Chory poured in a game-high 23 points, including 5-of-5 from the foul line and eight rebounds as Mapletown downed California 63-34 in girls Section 2-A action Wednesday.
Teammate Heather Shook recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Kayla Stevulak and Kaitlyn Novak added 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Lady Maples scored on 23 points and shot 14-of-17 from the foul line, compared to California, who tossed in 11 field goals and were 11-of-17 from the stripe.
Morgan Moluski led the Lady Trojans with 13 points, including one from beyond 3-point land.
Mapletown (11-6, 4-4) plays West Greene Tuesday night.
California is looking to stay alive in the playoff hunt with a win at Jefferson-Morgan on Monday.
Boys basketball
Belle Vernon 70, Southmoreland 51 – A trio of Belle Vernon players scored in double figures, highlighted by Jacob Dudzinski’s 18, en route to an easy non-section win over Southmoreland.
Josh Pohlot was next in the scoring column with 14 points, followed by Bo Lustig’s 12.
The Leopards scored on 29 field goals, and shot 5-of-19 from the foul line, while Southmoreland scored on 20 field goals and a 6-of-14 outing from the line.
Josh Millslagle paced Scotties with 17 points, six of which came from 3-point land.
Belle Vernon (15-5, 6-1) returns to section action Friday with a key match-up at Thomas Jefferson.
West Greene 64, Jefferson-Morgan 53 – Aaron Gifford lit up the scoreboard with a game-high 29 points and 15 rebounds, as West Greene handed Jefferson-Morgan a Section 2-A loss.
It’s the third-straight loss for the Falcons and the first win in the section for the Pioneers.
Teammate Josh Cook netted 23 points, including 11-of-13 from the foul line and two from beyond the three-point arc.
The Pioneers held a six-point advantage at the half, but erupted for a 23-point fourth-quarter burst to seal the deal.
Four J-M players scored in double figures highlighted by Ryan Edwards’ 15, followed by Justin Falcon’s 11.
Noah Pust and David Montibellar added 11 and 10 points respectively.
Pust also pulled down nine rebounds.
The Pioneers (2-14) are back in action Friday at Geibel Catholic.
Wrestling
West Greene 51, Carlynton 19 – Dakota Riffle kicked things off for West Greene with a 4-0 decision over Kris Williams at 112, en route to a Section 1-AA win over Carlynton.
At 119, Colton Blumer won by fall over Matthew Cole in 3:25, followed by Jordan Renner’s pin of Sam Walker (4:53) at 140.
Teammate Josh Durbin won by decision over Zack Janocha 3-1 at 145, while Keith Watson pinned Logan Ban in 3:19 at 145.
The final match featured Michael Hildreth at 285 win a decision win over Jaque Haygood 1-0.
Garrett Johnston (130), Tucker Conklin (160), Patrick Morris (171) and Chris Horr (189) all won by forfeit.
Friday the Pioneers (12-3) are back in action at Waynesburg.
Girls swimming
Mount Pleasant 111, Belle Vernon 59 – The Lady Leopards had a tough night in the pool, dropping a non-section meet Tuesday to the visiting Lady Vikings. Courtnee Basista had the only first place finish for Belle Vernon, winning the 500 freestyle.
Boys swimming
Belle Vernon 86, Mount Pleasant 67 – The Leopards had a better go of it than the girls did on Tuesday, defeating the visiting Vikings for a non-section victory.
Andre Maldonado (200 IM, 100 backstroke), Zachary Wardle (100 freestyle), Brendan Lacey (500 freestyle), and Adam Hamill (100 breaststroke) all finished first for the Leopards. The 200 medley relay team of Cory Wyke, Hamill, Aaron Mikula and Jay Lewis was victorious, as was the 200 freestyle relay quartet of Maldonado, Hamill, Wardle and Lacey.
