Albert Gallatin splits in team wrestling action The Albert Gallatin wrestling team pulled off an upset over higher-seeded Bethel Park, but fell to Canon-McMillan in the WPIAL Team Wrestling Tournament, Tuesday at Canon-McMillan High School.
In the opening round of the tournament, the Colonials conquered the Bethel Park squad 41-25.
The Tigers were 13-1 during the season and won Section 4-AAA.
In the second round, Canon-McMillan defeated AG by the score of 44-24.
Tyler Haines (103), Jacob Lowry (112), Dan Karpency (140), Jeff Dulaney (152) and Lance Bryson (171) went 2-0 in the tournament.
The Colonials extend their record to 14-6.
Penn-Trafford 43, Waynesburg Central 16 – The Warriors jumped out to a 15-0 lead and never looked back as they earned an impressive win over the Raiders in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA team tournament at Hempfield Area High School.
The Raiders managed just four wins on the night. Derrick Nelson (119) earned a 9-7 decision win in overtime over Penn-Trafford’s Brandon Grainy to cut the lead to 15-3.
Waynesburg Central’s next win came two bouts later as 130-pounder Brian Knapp scored a takedown in the third period to beat Stewart Owens 2-0. P-T won the next five bouts to build a 40-6 lead before Jeremy Ellis pinned Mike Weir at 4:13 of their 171-pound contest.
The Raiders’ final win came at 189 pounds where Keith Higginbotham put up a 10-0 major decision victory over Matt Grupp.
Along with giving up a forfeit at 112 pounds, the Raiders also suffered falls at 145, 160 and 285. Penn-Trafford faced the host Spartans in the quarterfinals. Hempfield beat Franklin Regional 51-13 in their first-round match.
Waynesburg Central will return to the mats on Friday, Feb. 1 when they host Butler.
Boys basketball
Belle Vernon 75, Elizabeth-Forward 73, 2OT – Jacob Dudzinski strikes again. The senior guard poured in a game-high 24 points, including two 3-pointers and the game-winning basket in double-overtime, as Belle Vernon defeated Elizabeth-Forward in Section 5-AAA boys basketball ball action Tuesday.
The win clinched the section title for the Leopards.
Dudzinski hit a 15-foot jumper as time expired in double-overtime.
Josh Pohlot was next in the scoring column with 14 points, followed by Bo Lustig’s 13 and Cory Williams’ 11.
Belle Vernon (17-5, 8-1) look forward to the playoffs, but first travel to Frazier today and host Yough on Friday to complete the regular season.
Norwin 81, Albert Gallatin 43 – Mike Shanahan lit up the scoreboard with a game-high 20 points, including three 3-pointers and 3-of-4 from the line, as Norwin cruised to an easy Section 1-AAAA win over host Norwin.
Nick Diorazio was next in the scoring column with 15, while Tyler Thomas and Tyler Urban added 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Knights jumped out to an early 26-9 first-quarter lead and never looked back, as they handed AG its 17th loss overall and 12th in the section.
Gerel Monroe paced the Colonials with 14 points, followed by Aaron Cromwell’s 10.
Albert Gallatin hosts University High today.
Uniontown 70, Southmoreland 39 – Thirteen was indeed a lucky number for the Uniontown boys basketball team.
James Pratt and Shawn Cicconi each led with a game-high 13 points, en route to an easy Section 3-AAA win over host Southmoreland.
The Red Raiders were in control the entire game, as they jumped out to a 24-4 first-quarter lead and never looked back.
Chris Leonard led the Scotties with nine points, including one from 3-point land.
Uniontown squares off against cross-town rival Laurel Highlands Friday.
Mapletown 56, West Greene 30 – Ethan Kovach netted 14 points, including five steals, as Mapletown downed visiting Jefferson-Morgan in Section 2-A action.
Josh Porterfield rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points, six of which came from beyond the 3-point stripe.
Aaron Gifford led the Pioneers with 13 points, followed by Josh Cook’s nine.
The Maples extend its record to 12-10 overall. Jefferson-Morgan is next up on the Mapletown schedule on Friday.
California 62, Jefferson-Morgan 34 – Donte Valentino netted 15 points and Travis Van Olst 13, as California upended Jefferson-Morgan in Section 2-A action.
The Trojans scored on 24 field goals and were 12-of-19 from the charity stripe, while J-M scored on 14 points and were 4-of-9 from the line.
Mix Mox led the Rocket attack with 11 points.
California keeps the unbeaten section streak alive at nine games, and they are 15-4 overall.
Clairton 70, Frazier 48 – It was a rough day at the office for the Frazier boys basketball team, as they suffered a Section 3-A loss to visiting Clairton.
Demetrius Rochelle lit up the scoreboard with a game-high 30 points, followed by Ian Johnson’s 12.
Jess Thompson rounded out the Clairton double-digit scoring with 11 points.
Frank Bartolomucci led the Commodores with 18 points, followed by Derek Miller’s 17.
Frazier scored on 18 field goals and were 11-of-20 from the foul line.
Belle Vernon visits Frazier today in a non-section contest.
Girls basketball
Geibel Catholic 50, Beth-Center 37 – Mia White put on a scoring clinic with 26 points, including a 7-of-11 stretch from the foul line, as Geibel Catholic defeated playoff-bound Beth-Center in a non-section girls showdown.
Breanne Dowden also eclipsed the double-digit plateau with 10 points, including 6-of-7 from the stripe.
As a team, the Lady Gators scored on 12 field goals and were 10-of-13 from the stripe.
A trio of B-C players scored in double digits, highlighted by Megan Sowers’ and Dannika Whitlow’s 11.
Teammate Breigh Devecka scored 10 points and was perfect from the foul line (4-of-4).
Beth-Center visits Bentworth Thursday, and Geibel takes on California.
Mapletown 45, West Greene 21 – Erika Chory and Kaitlyn Novak each led with 14 points, as Mapletown made quick work of West Greene in a Section 2-A match-up.
The Lady Maples led by three points after the first quarter, but erupted for a 17-8 second-quarter burst, and they kept West Greene at bay in the remaining periods.
Chelsey Jones led the Lady Pioneers with eight points.
Mapletown (12-6, 5-4) travels to Cornell today.
Charleroi 63, Frazier 33 – Makayla Neff tossed in 14 points as Charleroi defeated Frazier in non-league action Tuesday night.
She was followed in the scoring column Aly Lee and Jen Samoda with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Brittany Fisher was Frazier’s high scorer with 11 points.
The win raises Charleroi’s record to 13-10 overall (7-4 in Section 5), while the loss leaves Frazier at 0-22 (0-10 in Section 3).
