Carmichaels Legion holds off Colonial for 3-2 victory
Ashley Menear’s single plated Noah Pust in the bottom of the third inning, and the pitching duo of David Montibeller and Justin Falcon managed to hold off visiting Colonial Tuesday night to lead Carmichaels to a 3-2 Fayette American Legion Baseball League season-opening victory. Carmichaels scored two runs in the bottom of the first, the first on Don Hilenbrandt’s RBI single and the second on a passed ball.
Montibeller held Colonial off the scoreboard through six innings, but the visitors touched up the Carmichaels’ starter for a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Losing pitcher Evan Chafin had a two-run single in the inning. Mike Michalsky had doubled earlier in the inning.
Montibeller pitched six innings for the win, striking out five and walking none. Falcon earned the save, and helped the offense with a pair of singles.
Carmichaels plays at Belle Vernon tonight. Colonial (1-2) hosts Uniontown.
Fayette County League
Phil’s Tire 8, High Strung Racing 0 – Shayne Busti’s single with one out in the top of the sixth inning was the lone hit allowed by Matt Nelson as Phil’s Tire won a Fayette County Baseball League home game.
Phil’s Tire opened with two runs in its first at-bat, and then broke the game wide open with six runs in the bottom of the fifth. The home team was helped in the big inning with three consecutive walks, two of which scored.
Nelson went the distance for the win, striking out seven and walking two.
Phil’s Tire had six hits, and was led by Nathan Helster’s 4-for-4 performance. Helster also scored two runs and drove in two runs.
Phil’s Tire improves to 3-3-1 overall while High Strung Racing lost its first game, slipping to 4-1-1.
Blue Mountain 11, Bud Murphy’s 2 – Alex Lefcakis’ solo home run helped spot Bud Murphy’s to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the home team exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth for a Fayette County Baseball League victory.
Trailing 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, Blue Mountain pushed into the lead for good when J.W. Kayla’s single plated two runners to give the home team a 4-3 advantage.
Blue Mountain kept the offensive momentum alive in the fifth, scoring three more runs.
Kayla was the hitting star for the winners, finishing with two singles, a triple and three RBIs. Jeff Thompson and Jonathan Rodriguez both added two singles. Zach Solly had a double and Randy Littlecott tripled in the win.
Zach Jeney went the distance for the victory, allowing eight hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.
Lefcakis also doubled for Bud Murphy’s. Jared Early had two singles.
Blue Mountain improves to 4-1 while Bud Murphy’s goes to 5-2.
