Potter’s Clubhouse gets first FCBL win of the season

By The Herald-Standard Potter’s Clubhouse got its first victory of the year Sunday with a doubleheader split with California in Fayette County Baseball League. Potter’s won the first game, 8-6, and Cal came back to win the second contest, 11-7.

In the first game, Potter’s (1-11-1) exploded in the first inning to the with a six-run inning. Mike Dvorchak keyed the big inning with a three-run homer.

California bounced back with two runs in the second and two more in the third, but Potter’s countered with one in the third to trim the lead to 7-4.

After scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth, Potter’s tacked on their eighth run in the top of the sixth. The Tribe (5-10) put up two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but their comeback try came up short.

Scott Hruby improved to 1-2 on the year after tossing six innings of work in which he gave up six runs, four of which were earned. Brent Baker picked up the save by pitching the seventh.

Brian Harewicz got roughed up while suffering the loss. He gave up six runs in just two innings.

Mike Dvorchak added a groundout RBI to complete a four-RBI effort. Mike Klamerus drove in two runs in the victory.

Kyle Fisher doubled and homered while driving in two runs for Cal, and Jeff Tarley went a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Tribe.

California bounced back in game two in a big way as it jumped out to a 11-1 lead after four innings. Potter’s rallied for four runs in the fifth and a run each in the sixth and seventh.

Matt Dishong got the win for Cal with a complete-game effort in which he gave up nine hits, but struck out 12. Garrett Larrow (0-2) suffered the loss after throwing just two innings.

Klamerus put together another solid outing at the plate by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Nick Apicella was also solid for Potter’s as he went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Casey Kupets also drove in a run, while going 2-for-4.

The same two teams will meet up again today in a 6 p.m. makeup game at Hutchinson.

Blue Mountain 3, Phil’s Tire 0; Blue Mountain 5, Phil’s Tire 4 – Blue Mountain needed to stage a final-inning rally in the second game for a Fayette County Baseball League doubleheader sweep at home.

In the nightcap, Phil’s Tire pushed across two runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 4-4. With one out, Shane Molyneaux was hit by a pitch. Winning pitcher Zach Jeney then walked Ken Musko and Ryan Shetterly to load the bases.

Molyneaux scored on Greg Palladino’s fielder’s choice. Another Jeney walk loaded the bases, and John Salmon came through with a game-tying single.

Blue Mountain came right back in the bottom of the inning for the win.

Brad Baker opened the inning with a walk and move to second on J.W. Kayla’s sacrifice. Gene Franks was intentionally walked, and Charlie Humes walked to load the bases. Jono Menhart lofted a fly ball into the outfield for the game-winning sacrifice fly.

Jeney (5-0) struck out 10 and walked seven. Baker and Rick Smykla both had two singles in the win.

In the first game, Perry Cunningham (4-0) scattered three hits and his teammates made the most of four hits and four errors to eke out a win.

Jeff Thompson scored on a two-out throwing error in the bottom of the fifth after he had tripled.

In the sixth, Matt Bianco led off with a walk and moved to second on Franks’ single. Bianco scored on an error and Eric Holt drove home the second run of the inning with a single.

Cunningham went the distance, striking out six and walking two.

Blue Mountain (10-1-1) hosts High Strung Racing today at 6 p.m.
