Geibel girls post first softball win The Geibel Catholic girls softball team picked up its first win of the season with a 13-6 victory over Laurel Highlands Tuesday in exhibition action.

Nicole Ardabell paced the Lady Gators with a three-run home run in the first inning. She also singled twice and drove in six runs.

Winning pitcher Mia White went the distance with eight strikeouts and three walks, while Marissa Heavener struck out nine and walked nine in the losing effort.

Heavener also singled twice for LH, but Chelsea Kaylor ripped a two-run shot in the fifth inning, for the Fillies’ big hit.

Mapletown 11, Turkeyfoot Valley 1 – Heather Shook went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored as Mapletown cruised to an easy exhibition win over Turkeyfoot Valley.

Miranda Shipley (9-7) picked up the win on the mound, posting five strikeouts and no walks.

Teammate Kaitlyn Novak worked the last two innings and also paced the Mapletown offense with a triple.

Kam Coscheck recorded the loss with 12 walks and no strikeouts. She also had the lone Lady Ram hit with a double.

The playoff-bound Lady Maples await the pairings meeting this Friday to find out who’ll they’ll face in the WPIAL playoffs.

Connellsville 2, Waynesburg Central 0 – Erica Bartholow fanned nine Waynesburg Central batters en route to an exhibition win over host Waynesburg Central.

Waynesburg’s Lauren Minor took the loss with six strikeouts and no walks.

The Lady Falcons picked up single runs in the first and fourth innings.

Waynesburg (12-4) looks forward to post-season play.

Frazier 7, Uniontown 6 – Taylor Lux and Laurissa Ellis each singled twice as Frazier edged Uniontown in exhibition play.

Roxanne Jaramillo singled twice for Uniontown as did teammates Brandy Risha and Becky Fisher.

Winning pitcher Angie Kirchner posted 11 strikeouts and a walk, while Fisher took the loss. She struck out seven and walked eight.

Uniontown visits Somerset Friday in exhibition play.

High school baseball

California 4, Bentworth 3 – Ben Carson ripped two doubles and Matt Hartman added one as California defeated Bentworth in Section 1-A action.

Bentworth led 3-1 through four innings, but the Trojans put up three runs in the fifth for the win.

Travis Van Olst struck out five and allowed no walks in seven innings.

Ty Bell recorded the loss with two strikeouts and a walk and also led Bentworth at the plate with a double.

The loss eliminates Bentworth from the playoff scene.

Geibel Catholic 4, Frazier 2 – Tyler Erdely struck out 10 Frazier batters in a complete game and improved to 3-0 on the season as the Gators beat the Commodores to claim sole possession of second place in Section 1-A.

Mick Betler paced the Gators’ offense with a double and single for two runs batted in. Adam Duda was 2-for-2 and Anthony Speeney doubled for the Gators who finished section play at 10-4.

Frazier fell to 8-8 overall and 6-8 in section games despite a two-run homer from Craig Rebovich. Dave Genua took the loss.

The Gators put their 12-5 overall record on the line in an exhibition game at Brownsville Friday.

Carmichaels 12, Mapletown 2 – Zach Durbin homered and drove in four runs and teammate Chuck Gasti homered and drove in three runs as Carmichaels lambasted Mapletown in a Section 1-A contest.

Mapletown led 2-1 through two innings, but it was all Carmichaels after that, picking up three runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings and a pair of runs in the fifth.

Gasti also found time to record the win on the mound, and Jarrett Porterfield went home with the loss.

Joby Lapkowicz also added to the Carmichaels’ offense as he went 3-for-5 with three singles.

The Mikes will participate in post-season play, and Mapletown falls to 6-13 overall and 2-11 in the section.

College softball

California (Pa.) 7, West Chester 0 – Deanna Valentino led with a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate as California (27-16) handed West Chester an opening round playoff loss and will face Lock Haven in the second round of NCAA regional action.

California, which had 10 hits on the day, was helped by seven Golden Ram errors to score seven runs. Vulcan pitcher Sonia Petrosoniak went 7 innings, allowing only three hits, while walking one.

Petrosoniak had a perfect game through 4 1/3 before allowing a single to left. For the game the Golden Rams had only five base-runners with only two reaching second base safely.

California will return to action at 2 p.m. today against Lock Haven.
