Waynesburg Central nips Kittanning

By The 2 min read

In the playoffs anything can happen. Waynesburg Central needed every one of its nine singles, including three from Alyson Johnson and two from Breanna Morris, for a nine-inning 2-1 first-round win over Kittanning Thursday at California University of Pennsylvania’s Lilly Field.

With the game tied at 1, Waynesburg rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning when Rachel Rohanna led off the frame with a single.

Pinch-hitter Lindsay Mino reached first on an error, and Morris singled home Rohanna for the game-winner.

“Once you get in the playoffs, it doesn’t matter how many runs you score,” said Waynesburg coach Lou Giachetti. “You just want to win the game and get that first win under your belt.”

Kittanning took a 1-0 lead through the first four innings, but the Lady Raiders battled back in the bottom of the fifth.

Lauren Minor reached on an error to start the inning and Lindsay Minor came in as the courtesy runner.

Morris sacrificed Lindsay Minor to second base, and then she moved to third on a ground ball by Courtney Orndoff.

Johnson slapped a little roller up the third base line and Lindsay Minor beat the throw home for Waynesburg’s first run.

Lauren Minor picked up the win, striking out 11 and walking one.

Liz Lambert came away with the loss. She also went the distance, with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Kittanning’s Hallie Jack and Carrier Merryman doubled for the game’s only extra base hits.

“We left 11 runners on base and Kittanning made some nice defensive plays,” Giachetti said. “We need to come up with a key hit with runners in scoring position, but overall the girls showed the heart I know they have. They never give up and I’m real proud of them.”

Waynesburg (13-4) advances to the quarterfinals and will face Montour Monday at 5 p.m. at Lilly Field.
