Uniontown posts cross-country win over Brownsville Brownsville’s Cameron Coffey won the non-section meet on the Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus course in 18:44, but Uniontown had too much depth Tuesday, placing seven runners in the top 10 for a 23-38 victory.

The Red Raiders’ Tommy Kegg finished second in 19:43, just two seconds ahead of teammate Brodie Kelley. The Falcons’ Jon Rolfe was fourth in 20:13, and then Uniontown took the next five places, led by Nathan Wagner in fifth in 20:46.

The Red Raiders improve to 2-0 overall, opening the season last Friday with a 17-43 win at Frazier.

“Our times are really poor right now. I don’t know why,” said Uniontown coach Joe Everhart. “We lost 16 seniors (boys and girls) from last year. That’s really unbelievable.”

Uniontown will run in the California University of Pa. Invitational this Saturday morning.

Girls cross country

Uniontown 15, Brownsville 48 – Colleen O’Neil ran away from the pack, finishing over four minutes ahead of the next runner, to lead the Lady Raiders to a non-section victory at home at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.

O’Neil completed the course in 21:55 with teammate Jen Naymick second in 26:17. The Lady Raiders’ Carene Rhodes was third in 26:32, four seconds ahead of teammate Caileigh Carei. Violet Kern wrapped up the victory in fifth with a time of 26:51.

Kayla Brumley was the lone Brownsville runner in the top 10, finishing sixth with a time of 28:05.

Uniontown improves to 2-0 overall after opening the season last week with a victory at Frazier.

Boys golf

Uniontown 218, Connellsville 229 – With coach Aaron Scott at home tending to his wife and newborn baby born over the weekend, Joe LaPresta stepped in and the Red Raiders didn’t miss a beat, defeating the visiting Falcons for a Division I, Section 2 victory at Duck Hollow Golf Club.

Uniontown’s Chris Steele was medalist with a 5-over 40. Ben Sampson finished with a 42, and Mason Fordyce and Chris Perrotta both shot 43. Cody Nypaver rounded out the scores with a 50.

John Leonard was low man for the Falcons (1-4, 1-4) with a 43. Cody Ward and Mike Herman both shot 45 while Jesse Salyers and Shane Campbell both carded 48.

Uniontown (2-3, 4-3) takes to the road Thursday to play Belle Vernon at Willowbrook Golf Course. Connellsville heads back to Duck Hollow Golf Club Thursday to play Albert Gallatin.

Mount Pleasant 204, Albert Gallatin 235 – The Vikings bunched their scores within five strokes of medalist through fifth golfer, easily defeating the visiting Colonials for a Division I, Section 2 victory at Norvelt Golf Club.

Mount Pleasant’s Dylan Firmstone was medalist with a 3-over 39. Jordan Jones and Zac Heide both shot 40, and Mike Bando counted a 42. Ryan Bull’s 43 rounded out the scoring.

Mark Bartock was low man for Albert Gallatin (0-5, 0-5) with a 6-over 42. Taylor Barnickel shot a 44 and Mike Petrun carded a 47. Caleb Voithofer (49) and Brandon Sutton (53) rounded out the scoring.

Mount Pleasant (4-1, 4-1) hosts Ringgold Thursday.

Laurel Highlands 212, Ringgold 223 – The Mustangs kept pace with the Division I, Section 2 leaders, and knocked the Rams from the ranks of the undefeated with a road victory at Cedarbrook Golf Course’s Red course.

Laurel Highlands’ Zach Collins was medalist with a 3-over 39. Ben Thorn had a 41, Ben Sutton a 42, and Nate Nesser finished with a 43. Alex Ashton finished the scoring with a 47.

Rico Rodriguez and David Marchewka shared low honors for the Rams at 43.

Laurel Highlands (3-2, 3-2) is at home Thursday with Southmoreland. Ringgold slips to 4-1 in the section.

Belle Vernon 209, Southmoreland 244 – The Leopards didn’t count a score over 44 at the par-36 front nine at Timber Ridge Golf Course, easily defeating the Scotties for a Division I, Section 2 road victory.

Belle Vernon’s Bo Lustig shot a 1-over 37 for medalist honors. Nolan Russell fired a 42, and Tyber Lustig and Dave Johnson both shot 43. Brad Antal’s 44 rounded out the scoring.

Dan Wright was the low man for Southmoreland (1-4, 1-4) with a 43. Andrew Dzambo (51), Von Rhodes (54), Chip Smith (46), and Josh Schwartz (50) also factored in the scoring.

The Leopards (5-0, 6-0) look to maintain their first-place lead when they host Uniontown Thursday at Willowbrook Golf Course.

Carmichaels 210, California 212 – Dustin Phillips shot an even-par 37 at home at Carmichaels Golf Club, leading the Mikes to a Division II, Section 8 victory over the Trojans.

Carmichaels improves to 2-1 in the section and 3-2 overall, and will travel to Rohanna’s Golf Course Thursday to face Waynesburg Central. California slips to 2-2 in the section and 2-3 overall.

Zach and Brandon Wolfe had solid rounds for Carmichaels, both finishing with 39. Trevor Robinson (49) and Travis Prodan (46) closed out the scoring rounds.

Dave Beck was the low man for California with a 38. Dominic Roach was a shot off his pace, while Phil Langley shot a 43. Tyler VanOlst and Zach Edminston both finished with 46.

Waynesburg Central 211, Jefferson-Morgan 232 – The Raiders felt right at home on Greene County Country Club, easily defeating the Rockets to remain undefeated in Division II, Section 8 action.

Waynesburg’s Rachel Rohanna shot an even-par 36. Ben Virgin carded a 39, and Matt Fox finished with a 41. Emily Rohanna had a 47 and Taylor Moore closed the scoring with a 48.

Zach Berkstresser was low man for the Rockets with a 41. Ian Lawrence had a 46 and Josh Kokoska shot a 47. Robbie DeHaas and Alex Rush both shot 49.

“I thought we could be competitive out on our own course,” said Jefferson-Morgan coach John Curtis.

Jefferson-Morgan (2-2, 2-3) travels to Linden Hall Golf Course this afternoon for a non-section match with Frazier, while Waynesburg (4-0, 4-1) is on the road at Duck Hollow Golf Club for a non-section match with Albert Gallatin.

Frazier 219, Bentworth 229 – The Commodores liked the homecooking at Linden Hall Golf Course, edging the visiting Bearcats for a Division II, Section 2 victory. Frazier improves to 3-1 in the section while Bentworth slips to 2-2.

Craig Rebovich led Frazier with a 6-over 42. Tyler Rock shot a 43 and Nick Hawranko finished with a 44. Dustin Lerda and Matt Adams both carded 45 to close the scoring.

Bentworth’s Kyle Kukovcik was medalist with a 40.

Greensburg C.C. 197, Geibel Catholic 244 – The Gators had a rough road trip to Mt. Odin Golf Course as the Centurions breezed to a Division II, Section 2 home victory.

The Centaurians’ Ryan Neevan was medalist with a 1-under 36. Kevin Hickey was two shots off his pace, and Cooper Cullen finished with a 40. Nick Hutchins shot a 41 and Matt Fennena closed the scoring with a 42.

Shawn Erdely was low man for the Gators (1-2, 1-2) with a 44. Eric Ghinassi and Mike Noonan both shot 47. Ryan Lucostic had a 49 and Andrew Polechko shot a 57.

The Gators play Jeannette Thursday afternoon at Greensburg Country Club. Greensburg C.C. improves to 3-0 in section play.

Girls volleyball

Laurel Highlands 3, Waynesburg Central 0 – The Fillies opened the Section 7-AA schedule on a winning note, winning in straight sets, 25-13, 25-11, 25-13.

Demi Phillipy led the Laurel Highlands attack with 17 service points and nine kills. Mallory Hardison had 10 kills and three assists, and Paige Wolbert had a strong defensive effort with nine digs. Jessica Zavatchen controlled the offense with 31 assists.

Emily Bosworth had eight kills for the Lady Raiders.

Laurel Highlands (1-0, 1-0) hosts Washington Thursday night while Waynesburg (0-1, 0-1) travels to Beth-Center.

Brownsville 3, McGuffey 2 – The visiting Highlanders tied the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth set, but the Lady Falcons rallied in the final set, 15-13, to open Section 7-AA with a victory at home.

Brownsville won the opening set, 25-21, only to have McGuffey tie the match in the second, 25-13. The Lady Falcons went ahead again in the third, 25-19, before the Highlanders forced the fifth set.

Cori Walker led Brownsville with 19 service points. Emily Konter added 17 more, and Chevy Stoken finished with nine service points and on block.

Brownsville travels to Belle Vernon Thursday for a non-section match.

Beth-Center 3, Uniontown 0 – The Lady Bulldogs opened the Section 7-AA schedule with a sweep at Uniontown, winning by the scores 25-17, 25-18, 25-15.

Ashley Neifert led the attack with 12 kills, while Lindsey Coffey had a strong defensive effort with 11 blocks. Alicia Statzula dished out 18 assists, and Chelsie Lasosky had six service points.

Diamond Wright had 19 digs and nine blocks, while Mallory Sanner finished with 17 digs and seven blocks.

Uniontown (0-1, 0-1) remains in section action Thursday on the road at McGuffey.

California 3, Mapletown 0 – The Lady Trojans began the Section 5-A campaign with a strong effort on the road, defeating the Lady Maples in three sets, 25-15, 25-22, 25-16.

Mapletown (0-1, 0-1) is on the road Thursday against Geibel Catholic.

Girls tennis

Franklin Regional 5, Connellsville 0 – The Lady Panthers dropped only one set, shutting out the visiting Lady Falcons for a Section 1-AAA home victory.

Lyndsey Boors and Kylie Kerns won the lone set for Connellsville, tying their No. 2 doubles match before Michelle Reizin and Rachel Fedishen rallied to win the third set, 6-3. The No. 1 doubles pair of Kelsey Barner and Morgan Mechlenberg lost just one game to Connellsville’s top pair, Rachelle Wiltrout and Alyssa Augustine.

Alexandria Bailey dropped four games at No. 1 singles to Connellsville’s Laura Husband. Franklin Regional’s Cezanne Tollari lost only one game at No. 2 singles to Casey Nicholson, and Madelyn Rea shut out Caitlyn Anderson at No. 3 singles.

Connellsville (0-3, 1-3) hosts Hempfield in another section contest on Thursday.

Brownsville 5, Jeannette 0 – The Lady Falcons didn’t drop a set at home to even their Section 1-AA record with a win over the Lady Jayhawks.

Brownsville improves to 2-2 in the section as well as overall.

Angie Pelehac dropped only two games at No. 1 singles. Ferrell Jellots lost just one game at No. 2 singles, and Brittany Chiovitti didn’t lose any at No. 3 singles.

The No. 1 doubles team of Erin Ryan and Kendall Connors lost one game in their straight sets victory. Alyssa Conner and Rachel Rihaly had to work a little harder to win their No. 2 doubles match, beating Carolyn Yennerell and Courtney Wagner, 6-3, 7-5.

Brownsville (2-2, 2-2) travels to Southmoreland Thursday afternoon.

Boys soccer

California 2, Brownsville 0 – Adam Wilkinson scored both goals in the second half, from Spencer Popelas assists, to lead the Trojans to a Section 1-A home victory.

Gino Tarquinil turned aside 10 shots to preserve the shut out. California travels to Geibel Catholic on Thursday afternoon.

In other boys soccer action, Laurel Highlands and Baldwin tied, 1-1, and Mt. Lebanon beat Albert Gallatin, 11-0, in Section 4-AAA, Thomas Jefferson beat Belle Vernon, 3-1, and Southmoreland edged Elizabeth-Forward, 2-1, in Section 3-AA, Geibel Catholic lost on the road to South Allegheny, 4-1, in Section 1-A, Beth-Center defeated visiting Chartiers-Houston, 3-1, in Section 4-A, and Connellsville slipped past Greensburg Salem, 4-3, in non-section action.

Men’s soccer

California (Pa.) 1, Mercyhurst 1, OT – The match went to overtime, but both defenses held strong for a tie in the PSAC-West opener for both teams at California.

After a scoreless first half, the Trojans’ Nick Helbig scored at 46:28 from Jeremy Blymiller’s assist. The Lakers’ Marty Powell headed in Billy Ninopoulos’ corner at 75:19 to tie the game.

California’s Derek Yobbi made 10 saves, including two in the second overtime, while Mercyhurst’s Danny Mudd turned aside five shots.

Women’s volleyball

California (Pa.) 3, Clarion 0 – The Vulcans opened the PSAC schedule with a strong effort, sweeping past visiting Clarion at Hamer Hall. California improves to 5-0 overall while the Golden Eagles fall back to 4-1.

Joanna Nist finished with a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs. Ludmila Amaral had nine kills and seven digs, while Marta Hodge played strong defense with 21 digs. Renata Silva had a strong all-around effort with 11 digs, 33 assists and three service aces.

The Vulcans return to action this weekend in the two-day TownePlace Suites Classic hosted by the University of Findlay. California plays Hillsdale College and the host squad on Friday.
