Jeannette shuts out Brownsville, 41-0

However mistakes allowed Jeannette to take control of the game late in the first quarter and roll to a 35-0 lead at the half en route to a 41-0 win. During that stretch, the Jayhawks were able to take advantage of two fumbles, an interception and Brownsville’s failure to field a kickoff. “I felt my kids came out and played hard at the beginning, but our mistakes turned the ballgame around,” Brownsville coach Andy Assad said. “We have a lot of young kids playing, but now we’re two games into the season. We’ve got to start to mature and eliminate those mistakes.”

Jeannette jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the first when the Jayhawks covered 74 yards in five plays with James Derry ending the drive on a nine-yard scoring run. Dane Vaughn’s two-point run gave Jeanette an 8-0 lead.

Brownsville took over at its 15. J.J.Stoken was stopped for no gain and stripped on the first play from scrimmage and the Jayhawks recovered. The Falcons defense dropped Jordan Hall for a one-yard loss. On the next play Cameron Baradziej hit Brian Weightman on a 16-yard scoring toss. Tom Paulone’s two-point toss to Weightman gave he Jayhawks a 16-0 lead.

The Jayhawks added three more scores in the second quarter. Brownsville started a drive at its 20 late in the first quarter. At the start of the second, they continued to move to the Jeannette 49. The Falcons attempted a screen pass. Derry read the play stepped in front of the pass and raced 51 yards for the score.

On the ensuing kickoff Brownsville failed to field the ball and Jeannette recovered at the Brownsville 21. Hall took a direct snap and raced untouched into the end zone. Baradziej’s kick gave the Jayhawks a 29-0 lead.

The Jayhawks were able to take advantage of another Brownsville miscue late in the second quarter. The Falcons recovered a Jeannette fumble at their eight yard line, and drove to their 22, where they fumbled and the Jayhawks recovered. Baradziej passed to Ryan Pecoraro to the Brownsville six. On the next play Vaughn was dropped for a five-yard loss back to the 11. Baradziej then connected with Hall on an 11-yard scoring toss to the corner of the end zone for the score.

“Brownsville has some good kids, and were real physical with us,” Jeannette coach Ray Reitz said. “We were able to take advantage of some of their mistakes. We’ve got some things to clean up, but as long as we continue to play solid defense we’ll be OK.”

The Jayhawks were able to add one final score in the second half on a 25-yard scoring run by Mariell McGowan.
