Leopards’ Williams paces H-S Touchdown Club
If there is a trend at this early juncture, it is that there must be something in the water – something very good -along Route 51 North. Belle Vernon’s Cory Williams claimed sole possession of first place in the Herald-Standard Touchdown Club rankings with a two-touchdown effort in the Leopards’ 49-17 win over Southmoreland last Friday. Those scores, coupled with his three touchdowns on opening night, give Williams five touchdowns and 30 total points.
A few miles south of Belle Vernon along Route 51 sits Perryopolis, home of the Frazier Commodores and home to the second- and third-ranked football scorers in the Herald-Standard circulation area. Kevin Shanaberger scored a pair of second-quarter touchdowns in Frazier’s 40-24 win over Mapletown Friday to give him four touchdowns and 24 total points through two games. Right behind Shanaberger is Commodores’ teammate Jordan Adams, who scored once against Mapletown to give him three touchdowns and 18 total points.
The Herald-Standard Touchdown Club keeps track of those who score points and will honor the top scorer in the area at season’s end with a trophy to keep and the traveling plaque that will be displayed in his high school for the next year. Previous winners are Mapletown’s Ryan Geisel, Waynesburg Central’s Troy Cree and Jefferson-Morgan’s Justin Falcon.
Not coincidentally, both Belle Vernon and Frazier are undefeated heading into the start of conference play this Friday.
Tied with Adams for third place, also with 18 points on three touchdowns each, are Chris Faddis of unbeaten Jefferson-Morgan, Kevin Glover of Mapletown, Christian Henckel of Geibel Catholic and Grayling Sanders of Albert Gallatin. Faddis scored twice in Friday’s win at Avella. Glover scored all three of his touchdowns during Mapletown’s second-half comeback against Frazier. Henckel and Sanders shared the scoring lead with Williams a week ago.
Two other players have scored more than 12 points so far this season, Sanders’ Albert Gallatin teammate Jeremiah Karpency and Beth-Center’s Joshua Lockett. Both players have scored two touchdowns and added a two-point conversion.
All told, 63 players from the 16 teams covered by the Herald-Standard have scored at least one point.
