Grady sparks Uniontown’s victory over Derry
Grady caught a 63-yard touchdown pass from Doogie Sanner at 9:25 of the first quarter to give Uniontown a 6-0 lead, and Taylor Mouser connected on the first of two PATs for a 7-0 Red Raiders’ lead. Grady caught three passes from Sanner for 95 yards and one touchdown, and he also contributed with the biggest play for Uniontown’s defense.
With 6:02 left in the first quarter, Grady intercepted a Mike Kelly pass and returned it 75 yards to the house and Uniontown had a 13-0 lead. Jason Guthrie ran in the two-point conversion for a 15-0 Red Raider lead.
“I want to just thank God and my teammates,” Grady said. “I hurt my back before the game and that made it really tough, but Doogie (Sanner) found me with man coverage.”
Sanner was 14-27 on the day through the air for 253 yards and one touchdown, as James Pratt had three passes for 91 yards.
“This was a good win for us,” Uniontown coach John Fortugna said. “We had too come out and win a conference game. Brian (Grady) did a great job for us. This was a total team effort. I also want to thank my coaches for doing a great job.”
Uniontown took advantage of a fumble recovery with 10:11 to go in the second quarter, and Arnold Walker stormed into the end zone from 21 yards out at 8:42. Mouser’s PAT extended Uniontown’s lead to 22-0.
Walker again scored at 3:26 on a seven-yard scamper to score the Red Raiders’ final points of the night.
The Trojans came right back with a 67-yard touchdown run by Scott Dixon, and Josh George’s PAT narrowed Uniontown’s lead to 28-7 before halftime.
“Uniontown really came at us hard in the first half,” Derry coach Ron Polinsky said. “The turnovers really hurt us, but we knew what they had. They are a good football team, and I take my hat off to them.”
The second half was an offensive nightmare as neither team scored. The half was filled with sloppy play and turnovers. Uniontown’s defense stepped up and stopped the Trojan attack with pressure on the Derry quarterbacks.
Grady also picked off his second pass at 11:09 of the third quarter, but the Uniontown offense stalled.
“We are not satisfied with the win,” Grady said. “That is our motto for this season.”
Uniontown (1-0, 2-1) travels to Albert Gallatin next week for another Keystone Conference battle, while Derry (0-1, 1-2) hosts Yough.
“The defense really stepped up in the second half,” Fortugna said. “They played great and put a lot of pressure on the quarterback with the blitz.”
