Uniontown went to Rohanna’s Golf Club Monday, and for the second time this season came away with a non-section victory over Waynesburg Central, 197-203, in boys golf action. Ben Sampson (34), Mason Fordyce (37) and Chris Steele (38) all broke 40 for the round.
“I am very proud of Ben (Sampson) for his performance today against the defending state girls champion in Rachel Rohanna,” Uniontown coach Aaron Scott said. “This win is a confidence booster for us and it was a total team effort. This is the second time since I’ve been coaching here that we’ve beat Waynesburg at Rohanna’s.”
Waynesburg’s Matt Fox (33), Rachel Rohanna (40) and Ben Virgin (41) were the top three performers for the home team.
Cody Nypaver and Chris Perrotta shot matching 44s for Uniontown while Taylor Moore (43) and Anthony Jarrell (46) closed the scoring for Waynesburg.
Waynesburg (6-0, 7-2) will host Beth-Center today in Division II, Section 8 action while Uniontown (4-4, 6-4) will host a Division I, Section 2 match with Ringgold at Duck Hollow Golf Club.
Frazier 189, Southmoreland 228 – Frazier broke 190 at Linden Hall Golf Course in non-section action as it easily defeated the Scotties to set a new school record at the course.
Dustin Lerda shot an even-par 36 for the Commodores (6-3, 4-2) and birdied the fourth and fifth hole, while teammate Craig Rebovich birdied on the seventh hole on his way to a 3-over 39. Southmoreland’s Chip Smith (44), Andrew Dzambo (45) and Von Rhodes (45) had trouble navigating Linden Hall.
Frazier’s Nick Hawranko was 1-over 37, and had birdies on the second and fourth hole. Tyler Rock had three birdies on the day with a 37 and Zachary Lash had a birdie while shooting a 40.
Josh Schwartz (46) and Joey Martin (48) closed out the scoring for the Scotties (1-8, 1-7).
Belle Vernon 205, Geibel Catholic 228 – The Leopards were without Tyber Lustig, but it didn’t stop the visitors as they defeated Geibel Catholic at Pleasant Valley Country Club in non-section action.
Bo Lustig (34), Dave Johnson (38) and Nolan Russell (40) were impressive in the younger Lustig’s absence, as Belle Vernon remains undefeated. Brett Bishop (46) and Tim Moore (47) finished the match for the Leopards.
Eric Ghinassi (37), Mike Noonan (42) and Ryan Lucostic (44) had decent rounds for the Gators.
Shawn Erdley (50) and Nick Seese (55) were the fourth and fifth scores for the Gators (3-3, 3-4), who will host Bentworth today in Division II, Section 2 action.
Carmichaels 214, Washington 259 – The Mikes had an easy time with Washington at home at Carmichaels Golf Club in a non-section match.
Justin Phillips led the Mikes’ attack with a 40 and teammate Zach Wolfe had a 41. Brandon Wolfe chipped in with a 42. Travis Prodan (43) and Christian Berardi (48) were the final two scores for Carmichaels (2-3, 4-5). The Mikes will travel to Brownsville on Wednesday.
Dan Crumrine (45), Lizz Bombara (49) and Sam Interval (51) were the top scores for the Little Prexies.
Jefferson-Morgan 212, Charleroi 244 – Josh Kokoska fired an even-par 36 to lead the Rockets to a non-section victory over the visiting Cougars at Greene County Country Club.
Robbie DeHaas (40), Zach Berkstresser (43), Alex Rush (45), and Joe DeFrancesco (48) rounded out the scoring for Jefferson-Morgan.
The Rockets (5-3, 3-2) host Brownsville in a Division II, Section 8 match Thursday.
Eric Anderson was the low man for Charleroi (1-9, 1-6) with a 44.
Girls golf
Mount Pleasant 182, Penn Trafford 193 – Mount Pleasant remained undefeated with a Section 1 win over Penn Trafford at Irwin Country Club.
Nicole Smith led the Lady Vikings once again with a 37 on the par-34 front nine. Maci Seibel shot a 44 and Courtney Shields had a 49.
Brittany Berkovich (43), Holly Lohr (47) and Kylie Trey (51) were not able to keep up with the Lady Vikings’ top three.
Mount Pleasant’s Callie Jesso and Penn Trafford’s Katie Dalzell shot matching 52s as their team’s No. 4 golfers.
Mount Pleasant (9-0, 11-0) travels to Franklin Regional on Wednesday for another Section 1 match. Penn Trafford falls to 7-2 in section play with both losses coming at the hands of the Lady Vikings.
Girls tennis
Norwin 3, Connellsville 2 – Connellsville swept the doubles action, but Norwin had already put the match away with a sweep of its own in singles to win a Section 1-AAA contest at Norwin.
Casey Nicholson and Alyssa Augustine won the No. 1 doubles 7-6, 7-1, 6-4, against Katherine Kennedy and Sam Deflitch, and Lyndsey Boors and Rachelle Wiltrout defeated Cass Zetner and Keri Morgan, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, to sweep the doubles.
The singles weren’t very friendly for Connellsville (1-7, 2-7) with Norwin’s Morgan Dolinar, Jen McDonald and Mariana Clementi defeating Connellsville’s Laura Husband, Caitlyn Anderson and Laura Summy.
Connellsville will host Latrobe on Wednesday in a Section 1-AAA matchup. Norwin improves to 2-6.
Greensburg C.C. 5, Brownsville 0 – The Lady Centurions are one of the top-ranked teams in the state, and showed why with a Section 1-AA road victory over the Lady Falcons.
Samantha DeStefano defeated Brownsville’s Angie Pelehac, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Greensburg C.C.’s Caitlyn Null didn’t drop a game at No. 2 singles against Ferrell Jellots, and Susi Soltis completed the sweep, dropping just one game at No. 3 singles with Brittany Chiovitti.
The visitors kept rolling in the doubles with the No.1 team of Madeline Leo and Annmarie Queale beating Brownsville’s Erin Ryan and Kendall Connors in straight sets, and the No. 2 duo of Faith Findi and Brianna Hauser dropping one game to Alyssa Conner and Rachel Rihaly.
Girls volleyball
Belle Vernon 3, Uniontown 1 – The Lady Raiders won the first game, but Belle Vernon won the remaining three to pick up the win in non-section action at Uniontown’s A.J. Everhart Memorial Gymnasium.
The Lady Raiders won the first match, 28-26, then lost 25-10, 25-16 and 25-19. Diamond Wright led Uniontown in blocks with five, and Mallory Sanner led the home team in digs with 18.
Uniontown (0-3, 1-6) will travel to Waynesburg Central today for a section match.
Girls soccer
Waynesburg Central 7, Uniontown 0 – Waynesburg had two goals each from three different players to defeat Uniontown in a Section 6-AAA match at Waynesburg.
Taylor Augustine scored in the 18th and 26th minutes of the first half and also set up two goals. Rebecca Rohanna scored in the 27th and 37th minutes of the second half and had one assist. Claire Vehar scored in the 21st minute of the first half and in the 26th of the second.
Waynesburg (3-1, 4-4) scored four goals in the first half and three in the second. Anne Throckmorton stopped three shots, while Uniontown’s Sarah Mayse turned aside 15. The Lady Raiders will travel to Connellsville on Wednesday.
Connellsville 5, Yough 0 – The Lady Falcons prepared for their key Section 6-AAA home match Wednesday with Waynesburg Central with a shutout performance on the road against the Lady Cougars.
Jenna Luczka scored a hat trick, her first of the season, for Connellsville. She scored the lone goal of the first half and the final two goals of the game. Brittany Guess and Sam Brown also scored in the second half for the Lady Falcons.
Connellsville keeper Jessica Ohler turned aside seven shots to preserve the shutout. Yough’s Hope Sedunov made 15 saves.
Connellsville improves to 3-1 in the section and 6-2 overall.
Belle Vernon 17, Albert Gallatin 0 – Albert Gallatin could not keep up with the Lady Leopards in a Section 6-AAA match at Belle Vernon.
Albert Gallatin (1-3, 2-5) will host Laurel Highlands on Wednesday in another section match.
