Geibel Catholic made short work of Carmichaels Tuesday night with a 3-0 win in Section 5-A girls volleyball action at Carmichaels. Carly Ciarochi led the Lady Gators in kills with nine and teammate Ally Robinson had six. Julianne Speeney had 25 assists for the visitors. Speeney was the leader in service points with 18. She also picked up four aces.
Maria Ross had 13 service points and two aces for Geibel (5-0, 5-0). The Lady Gators won by scores of 25-8, 25-10 and 25-15.
Geibel hosts California on Thursday in a Section 5-A contest.
Washington 3, Brownsville 0 – Brownsville had a tough night as it dropped a Section 7-AA match at Washington.
Washington won 25-9, 25-13 and 25-7 to pick up the sweep.
Brownsville’s Karmen Bruschi had three service points and two kills, and Emily Konter had two service points.
Brownsville (2-2, 2-4) travels to Laurel Highlands on Thursday for a section match.
Waynesburg Central 3, Uniontown 0 – Uniontown hung tough, but Waynesburg proved to be too much in a section match at Waynesburg.
Becca Phipps had 16 assists, and Emily Bosworth had six kills and seven aces for Waynesburg (4-2, 7-4).
The Lady Raiders won 25-19, 25-21 and 25-18. Uniontown (0-4, 1-6) travels to Mapletown on Monday for a non-section match.
Boys golf
Albert Gallatin 243, Southmoreland 246 – Albert Gallatin picked up its first section win of the year, defeating Southmoreland at Duck Hollow in Division I, Section 2 play.
Mike Petrun and Chip Smith shot 45s to lead their respective schools.
Von Rhodes (48) and Dan Wright (49) rounded out the top three for the Scotties who dropped to 1-8 in the section and 1-9 overall.
Southmoreland’s Andrew Dzambo (52) and Josh Schwartz (52) couldn’t match the Colonials’ Caleb Voithofer (48), Brandon Sutton (49) and Mark Bartock (49). Taylor Barnickel’s 52 closed the scoring for the Colonials.
Albert Gallatin (1-8, 2-9) faces Laurel Highlands at 3 p.m. Thursday at Duck Hollow, while Southmoreland hosts Ringgold.
Waynesburg Central 201, Beth-Center 220 – Waynesburg avenged its loss to Uniontown with an impressive showing against Beth-Center in a section match.
Rachel Rohanna cared a 37 for medalist honors, while teammates Matt Fox and Anthony Jarrell scored matching 40s. Jimmy Webeck (40), Travis Crawford (41) and Teddy Yanak (44) were topo scorers for the Bulldogs.
Taylor Moore shot a 41, and Ben Virgin’s 43 closed scoring for the Raiders. Brock Hartley (45) and Patrick Ritsko (50) were the No. 4 and No. 5 scorers for Beth-Center.
Waynesburg (7-0, 8-2) returns to section play against California Thursday at Cedarbrook. Beth-Center falls to 3-5 in the section and 4-6 overall.
Ringgold 215, Uniontown 225 – After defeating Waynesburg Monday for one of its biggest wins of the year, Uniontown was defeated by Ringgold at Duck Hollow in a section match.
Mason Fordyce (41) and Chris Steele (43) had impressive rounds for the Red Raiders, but Mike Yavorsky shot an even-par 37 for the Rams. David Marchewka (42) and Alex Allen (43) put Ringgold in a good spot.
Ben Sampson (45), Chris Perrotta (47) and Cody Nypaver (49) rounded out the scoring for Uniontown (4-5, 6-5).
Rico Rodriguez (45) and Connor Kane (48) closed the books for Ringgold (6-3).
Uniontown looks to rebound Thursday when it travels to Mt. Pleasant.
Bentworth 228, Geibel Catholic 230 – Geibel Catholic gave Bentworth all it could handle, but just couldn’t get it done in section play at Pleasant Valley Country Club.
Eric Ghinassi was the medalist with a 37, and Ryan Lucostic chipped in a 47 for the Gators.
Clay Roman (38) took top honors for Bentworth, and Garrett Danich shot a 45.
Kyle Kukovcik (47), Ty Bell (47) and Chris Zigerelli (51) were the final three finishers for Bentworth. Mike Noonan (48), Nick Seese (48) and Shawn Erdley (50) completed the scoring for Geibel (3-4, 3-5).
Next for Geibel is the section qualifier Monday at Linden Hall.
Bentworth ups its record to 4-2 in the section and 7-3 overall.
Jefferson-Morgan 205, Brownsville 229 – Josh Kokoska fired a 1-over 37 and Zach Berkstresser finished with a 39 to lead the Rockets to a Division II, Section 8 victory at Greene County Country Club over the visiting Falcons.
Robbie DeHaas (41), Joe DeFrancesco (43) and Alex Rush (45) rounded out the scoring for Jefferson-Morgan as the Rockets improve to 4-2 in the section and 6-3 overall.
The Rockets travel to Carmichaels Golf Club Thursday for a section match against Beth-Center.
Jeremy Kopacko was low man for Brownsville (0-6, 0-8) with a 38. Jacob Lewis finished with a 40 and Mike Peton carded a 41. Joe Kromer’s 51 and Albert Petrosky’s 59 finished the scoring.
Belle Vernon 203, Laurel Highlands 219 – Belle Vernon remained undefeated with a win over Laurel Highlands in section action at Willowbrook.
Tyber Lustig (38), Bo Lustig (38) and Dave Johnson (42) were the top scores for the Leopards (9-0, 11-0).
Nate Nesser (41), Ben Sutton (44) and Dave Byers (44) led the Mustangs (5-4).
Brad Antal’s 42 and Nolan Russell’s 43 displaced the Mustangs’ Ben Thorn (45) and Alex Ashton (45).
Boys soccer
Elizabeth-Forward 13, Uniontown 0 – Host Elizabeth-Forward scored nine first half goals and cruised to win a Section 3-AA match against Uniontown.
The Warriors dominated in the first half as Tyler Abels scored two of his three goals. Shane Hallett scored his first of two goals in the first as well, as teammate Cameron Ealser added another.
Uniontown (0-5, 1-6) is at home on Thursday as it takes on Steel Valley in a section match.
Laurel Highlands 9, McKeesport 0 – Laurel Highlands made short work of McKeesport in a Section 4-AAA match at McKeesport.
Elliot Weiss scored once in the first half and twice in the second for the hat trick. Glen Loukota had two goals for the Mustangs (2-1, 5-1-2).
Chase Frankhouser knocked home two goals for Laurel Highlands, which hosts Bethel Park in a section match on Thursday.
Boys cross country
Ringgold 22, Connellsville 33; Connellsville 20, West Mifflin 41; Ringgold 22, West Mifflin 42 – The Falcons’ Nick Miller finished first in 19:07, but the Rams had five runners finish in the top 10 for a Section 2-AAA triangular sweep at Connellsville.
John Sendeck finished second for Ringgold in 19:31 and teammate Brian Johnson was third in 19:31.
Connellsville’s Nick Cicio was seventh in 20:14, just four seconds ahead of teammate Andrew Cramer. Seth Soberdash (20:48) was 11th overall with Ryan Butela (21:14) finishing 13th.
Belle Vernon’s Alex Weaver also ran, finishing ninth overall in 20:34.
Connellsville (3-1, 3-2) will host Uniontown and Laurel Highlands next Tuesday with all three teams participating in Saturday’s A.J. Everhart Invitational at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.
Laurel Highlands 24, Thomas Jefferson 37 – The Jaguars’ Evan Gates finished first in 17:31, but the Mustangs’ Anthony Cecchini led his team home to a Section 2-AAA victory at Laurel Highlands.
Cecchini was second in 17:57. Alec Sunyecz was fourth overall in 19:12, followed by Ian Sunyecz (19:34), Phil Cooper (19:59), Tyler Geshay (20:31), Zack Epejesy (20:40), and Randy Kifus (20:56).
Laurel Highlands improves to 2-1, and will be in action Saturday in the A.J. Everhart Invitational before traveling to Connellsville Tuesday to run a section triangular with Uniontown.
Uniontown 15, Albert Gallatin 46; Uniontown 15, Elizabeth-Forward 50; Albert Gallatin 19, Elizabeth-Forward 37 – The Red Raiders’ Brodie Kelley and Nathan Wagner finished 1-2, and their teammates grabbed three of the next four places for a Section 2-AAA home victory at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.
Kelley’s winning time was 18:13 with Wagner second in 18:56. Albert Gallatin’s Calvin Fenton placed third in 19:05, ahead of Uniontown’s Tommy Kegg (19:05), Torin Kelley (19:15), and Jon Jones (19:30).
The Colonials’ Kyle Oldland was seventh overall in 19:40.
Girls cross country
Connellsville 22, Ringgold 34; Connellsville 15, West Mifflin 50; Ringgold 15, West Mifflin 50 – The Lady Falcons remained undefeated after sweeping a Section 2-AAA triangular at home.
April Shultz led Connellsville (4-0, 5-0) home in a winning time of 23:33. Teammate Kayla Booher was just 12 seconds behind in second place. Anna Murphy (6th, 26:55), Samantha Virgillo (7, 27:03), and Kensey Durst (10, 27:43) all finished in the top 10.
Laurel Highlands 23, Thomas Jefferson 34 – The Fillies took the top two places and three of the top five on their way to a Section 2-AAA victory over the visiting Lady Jaguars.
Jordyn Hartsek led the way in a winning time of 22:05 with teammate Rebecca Yarish second in 24:12. Amanda Parker was third for the Fillies in fourth place with a time of 24:27. Laurel Shull was seventh overall in 24:57 and Anna Howard closed the scoring in ninth place in 25:54.
Uniontown 19, Elizabeth-Forward 40; Uniontown 16, Albert Gallatin 47; Elizabeth-Forward 23, Albert Gallatin 33 – Colleen O’Neil finished first in 21:04, and had five Uniontown teammates follow her in the top 10 for a Section 2-AAA victory at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus.
Caileigh Carei was third overall in 23:23, 26 seconds ahead of teammate Violet Kern and 34 seconds ahead of Jen Naymick.
After Albert Gallatin’s Stephanie Ardabell was sixth in 24:41, Uniontown’s Carene Rhodes wrapped up the victory in seventh with a time of 24:46.
Uniontown will host the A.J. Everhart Invitational at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus on Saturday morning.
Women’s soccer
Waynesburg University 1, Muskingum 1 – Waynesburg University and Muskingum played into double overtime and couldn’t decide a winner in a match held at Waynesburg.
Muskingum (4-1-1) got on the board early at 4:16 of the first half on a goal by Nicole Langston. Alyssa Cushman picked up the assist. The Yellow Jackets (4-1-1) responded in the second half with an unassisted goal from Katie Gaspich.
The teams tied in shots with 16, as Waynesburg goalkeeper Katrian Kelly stopped six shots in 65 minutes of action.
