Tuesday, that foursome led the undefeated LH team to a fourth straight victory with a 25-8, 25-9, 25-9 Section 7-AA sweep of visiting McGuffey. Phillipy had three service aces and nine kills, Hardison eight kills and nine digs, Zavatchen 26 assists and Wolbert chipped in with three aces.

Sophomore Janelle Cooper had four blocks.

Coach Lora Maddas said that the difference was in the matchup of her seniors against McGuffey’s freshmen and sophomores. “Our hitters were on tonight, and we changed our lineup a couple times, she said”

Along with Cooper, freshman Tessa Sova performed well to complement the upperclassmen. “Tessa has done well, coming off the bench,” Maddas said.

Laurel Highlands used several runs to secure the momentum in every set.

Leading 7-3 in the first set, LH ran off six straight points with Victoria Kearns serving to take a 13-3 lead. Then with a 17-8 lead, the hosts scored eight straight points with Zavatchen serving to close out the match.

The same held true in the second set as the teams were tied at 3-3 when LH scored six consecutive points with Phillipy serving. The hosts then scored 10 straight points with Wolbert serving to build a 24-8 lead before winning 25-9.

McGuffey (4-9, 1-4 section) briefly led 2-0 in the third set by blocking several kill attempts.

Maddas felt Laurel Highlands responded well. “We countered their blocking with Cooper and Phillipy,” she said

The hosts slowly built the lead from 5-2 to 11-6 before scoring 10 straight points with Hardison serving. Moments later, they closed out the victory with four points as Zavatchen served.

Maddas said that her team is taking it one game at a time, but is capable of “great things.” She said, “Our passing could have been better. Passing is our goal during practices.”
