Red Raiders race past Colonials
Now 2-0 in section play, next Friday’s Greensburg Salem at Uniontown game may be the Keystone’s game of the year. “They’ll be coming into our house,” said Red Raiders coach John Fortugna. “Right now we’re sitting pretty good, we have some things to work on, but I think we’ll be ready.”
The Raiders dominated all over the offensive side of the ball, as no fewer than six players took snaps with Arnold Walker, Jason Guthrie and Doogie Sanner leading the way with a total of 229 rushing yards.
The Colonials, meanwhile, continue to mature with a young team, as they struggled to find an offensive grove.
“We got to play a lot of defense tonight,” said Colonials coach Bill Elias. “We’ve got a lot of underclassmen and Uniontown had a lot of experience. Teams win because of experience. Our kids did the best they could, and I think we’ll get there.”
The Red Raiders looked like they would get on the board earlier in the game, taking advantage of a James Pratt recovery of a mishandled punt catch with 2:16 left in the first quarter.
The Raiders marched to the 1-yard line, where they were denied a touchdown after Arnold Walker failed to cross the goal line on a fourth-and-1.
After the Colonials were unable to get out of the shadow of their own goal line, Guthrie took the first snap of the next series for an explosive 39-yard touchdown run to give the Raiders a 7-0 lead at the 9:42 mark in the second quarter.
A series later the Red Raiders once again found themselves with a fourth down, this time at the Colonial’s 5-yard line, where Sanner connected with Guthrie for a touchdown pass to put the Raiders up 14-0, a lead they would take into the half after holding the Colonials to only 40 total yards.
Sanner would fire the deep ball early in the third quarter, connecting with Pratt on a 66-yard touchdown bomb following a holding penalty.
The Colonials responded quickly, Grayling Sanders took advantage of a beautifully executed screen play and provided an electric cut back on a 71-yard touchdown reception to cut the Uniontown lead to 21-6.
However the Colonials would not find the end zone again as Guthrie and Walker slashed their way down the field for 21 unanswered points.
Sanner walked in for a four-yard touchdown run at the 5:55 mark, while Walker added his first touchdown at 3:58 mark in the third quarter.
Ronald Skinner closed out the third quarter with his second touchdown run of the year, a 1-yard plunge at the :21 mark.
Sanner finished his night 9-of-23 passing for 138 yards and two touchdowns, plus five rushes for 94 yards.
Sanders led the Colonials in rushing with nine carries for 20 yards.
