Uniontown nips Laurel Highlands, 4-3 Laurel Highlands and Uniontown needed two overtimes to decide a winner with the Lady Raiders picking up a 4-3 Section 6-AAA win in girls’ soccer action Monday night at Laurel Highlands. Kim Natural had the first and last goals in the contest for Uniontown.

The Fillies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half and took it into the break.

Uniontown scored three goals in the second half as Natural, Krista Jackson and Meggie Menarchak put the ball past the Fillies’ goalkeeper. Laurel Highlands countered with two goals of its own and the two went into overtime tied at three.

Neither team scored in the first overtime and Natural made her mark in the second overtime to give her team a thrilling victory over their cross-town rivals.

Uniontown (3-4, 4-5) travels to Connellsville on Wednesday in a Section 6-AAA battle.

Beth-Center 8, Bentworth 2 – Megan Sowers had a hat trick for the Lady Bulldogs as they defeated Bentworth in Section 1-AA action at Bentworth.

Sowers scored all her goals in the first half with the first one coming at 39:25. She also scored at 30:59 and 13:05. The Lady Bulldogs had seven goals in the first half and one in the second. Bentworth had two goals in the second.

Karissa Snyder stopped seven shot in goal for Beth-Center (1-4, 3-6-1). The Lady Bulldogs will play at Charleroi on Wednesday in Section 1-AA play.

Waynesburg Central 2, Albert Gallatin 0 – Despite 36 saves from Albert Gallatin’s Alyssa Clark, Waynesburg defeated host Albert Gallatin in a Section 6-AAA contest.

The Lady Raiders received two early goals from Rebecca Rohanna and Taylor Augustine. Rohanna scored in the sixth minute of the first half on a feed from Naomi Lebhold and Augustine scored in the ninth minute off an assist form Claire Vehar.

Anne Throckmorton made four saves for Waynesburg (5-2, 6-5).

Boys golf

California 205, Jefferson-Morgan 205 – A playoff was needed to decide this Division II, Section 8 match as David Back and Philip Langley defeated Ian Lawrence and Zach Berkstresser to lead the Trojans to victory.

With the schools tied after the final scores were added, the teams picked two golfers to play a two-hole overtime to decide the winners. The Trojans picked Beck (38) and Langley (39), while the Rockets chose Lawrence (38) and Berkstresser (41).

Beck and Langley defeated Lawrence and Berkstresser in the playoff to give California a huge section win. All four players carded pars on the first hole, but the Trojans had a birdie and a par on the second, while the Rockets had two pars.

Josh Kokoska (43), Joe DeFrancesco (41) and Alex Rush (42) played solid rounds for the Rockets in the match to set up the playoff. California’s Zac Edmiston (41), Tyler VanOlst (42) and Dominic Roach (45) closed the scoring.

California (5-3, 5-4) and Jefferson-Morgan (5-3, 7-4) will play in the Division II, Section 8 qualifiers today at Cedarbrook.

Carmichaels 219, Beth-Center 228 – The Mikes’ Brandon Wolfe had the low round of 2-over 39 with brother Zach carding a 40 for a key Division I, Section 8 victory at Carmichaels Golf Course.

Carmichaels (6-5) pulls into tie with California and Jefferson-Morgan for second place at 4-3. The Bulldogs slip to 3-7 in the section and 4-8 overall.

Justin Phillips (44), Travis Prodan (48), and Trevor Robinson (48) rounded out the scoring for the Mikes.

Teddy Yanak was the low man for the Bulldogs with a 2-over 39. Travis Crawford (42), Jimmy Webeck (45), Brook Hartley (49) and Alex Antonio (53) also had scoring rounds for Beth-Center.

Girls golf

Mt. Pleasant 179, Gateway 237 – Mt. Pleasant wrapped up the Section 1 title with a victory over Gateway at Norvelt.

Nicole Smith (36), Callie Jesso (45) and Megan Smith (47) put the Lady Vikings in a good spot for its 13th win in as many tries. Rilyn Gancia (51), Joy Pedrow (57) and Natalie Giannangeli (64) could not match the home teams score for Gateway (3-8).

Courtney Shields (51) rounded out the scoring for Mt. Pleasant and Nikki Washington’s 65 closed the scoring for Gateway. Mt. Pleasant (11-0, 13-0) will play in the WPIAL individual qualifiers on Wednesday at Franklin Regional.

Girls tennis

Franklin Regional 4, Connellsville 1 – Franklin Regional swept the singles action and never looked back in defeating Connellsville in a Section 1-AAA match at Connellsville.

The visitor’s Alexandra Bailey defeated Laura Husband 6-2, 6-1 and Cezanne Tollari got past Caitlyn Anderson 6-1, 6-1 to give Franklin Regional (8-3) a 2-0 lead. The No. 3 singles match went to Franklin Regional’s Madelyn Rea, who defeated Laura Summy 6-1, 6-0.

After dropping the No. 1 doubles match, the Lady Falcons team of Lyndsey Boors and Rachelle Wiltrout beat Michele Reizine and Crystal Greenlund 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 to avoid the sweep for Connellsville (1-9, 2-9).

Brownsville 4, Jeannette 1 – Brownsville won the first four matches in singles and No. 1 doubles to defeat Jeannette in Section 1-AA action at Jeannette.

Angie Pelehac, Ferrell Jellots and Brittany Chiovitti all won in singles action for the Lady Falcons (6-5, 6-5). Pelehac won 6-0, 6-1, followed by Jellots winning 6-2, 6-0 and Chiovitti wrapped up the singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win.

Brownsville’s Erin Ryan and Kendall Connors defeated Carolin Yennerell and Courtney Wagner 6-2, 6-1. Julia Bitner and Tara Snyder defeated Rachel Rihaly and Alyssa Conner 7-5, 6-3 to avoid the sweep for Jeannette (0-10).

Girls volleyball

Uniontown 3, Mapletown 0 – Uniontown picked up the sweep in a non-section match against host Mapletown.

Kaitlyn Novak had seven aces for the Lady Maples and Lacey Matthews had three kills. Miranda Shippley had four assists. Diamond Wright had six kills and seven digs for Uniontown, while Mallory Sanner had four aces.

The Lady Raiders won 25-11, 25-20 and 25-15 for victory. Mapletown will travel to Carmichaels today in a Section 5-A contest and Uniontown (0-4, 2-6) is at Laurel Highlands in a Section 7-AA contest.
