Brownsville and Geibel Catholic kept their hopes for a Section 3-AA title alive Tuesday with sweeps on the road. The Falcons traveled to Washington Park and came home with a 15-50 win over the Prexies and a 21-34 victory against Burgettstown.
The Gators were on the road at Avella and returned to Connellsville with a 15-50 wins over Waynesburg Central and Avella, and a 23-35 victory against Chartiers-Houston.
Brownsville and Geibel Catholic both improve to 6-1 in the section.
Geibel Catholic hosts undefeated Fort Cherry, Washington and Avella next Tuesday, while Brownsville and Frazier travel to Chartiers-Houston.
Brownsville’s Cameron Coffey finished first at Washington Park with a time of 17:46 and teammate Jonathan Rohlf was second in 18:23.
Corey Peton (6th, 19:56), Jason Bella (8th, 20:40), and Zack Hibbs (9th, 20:43) rounded out the top five finishers for the Falcons.
Waynesburg Central’s Bobby Stitchick won the quadrangular at Avella in 20:40, 17 seconds ahead of Geibel Catholic’s Adam Siecinski. The Raiders’ Cody Snyder was third in 21:10 and teammate Zac Cesa was sixth in 21:42.
The Gators’ Anthony Speeney (7th, 21:48), John McGrogan (8th, 22:04), Taylor Nowicki (9th, 22:09), and Daniel Dix (10th, 22:09) then filed in to give the Gators the quad sweep.
Fort Cherry 17, Frazier 44; Fort Cherry 17, McGuffey 38; McGuffey 25, Frazier 30 – The Rangers remained undefeated in Section 3-AA by taking the first four places in the triangular at McGuffey.
Andrew Lucarini easily won the race in 17:04, with brother Adam a distant second in 19:00.
John Allison (3rd, 19:20) and Dustin Darnley (4th, 19:23) rounded out the top four.
The Commodores’ Brandon Mathews was fifth in 20:04, 35 seconds ahead of teammate Sawyer Palonder. Garrett Baber (15th, 21:19), Steve Cowen (16th, 21:39), and Ryan Kennedy (17th, 22:01) rounded out the scoring for Frazier.
The Lady Commodores didn’t have enough runners to score, but had two runners finish in the top 10. Charleroi’s Jessica Bastin, running along with Frazier, won the race in 22:37. Frazier’s Rebecca Leonard was fourth overall in 25:25 with Dominique Hewitt eighth in 29:12.
West Mifflin 26, Thomas Jefferson 31; West Mifflin 15, Albert Gallatin 50; Thomas Jefferson 15, Albert Gallatin 50 – Joe McMichael was the first Colonial to finish in the Section 2-AAA triangular at West Mifflin, finishing 12th in 24:53.
Robert Burnsworth was 15th in 25:42 and Andrew Milliken finished 17th with a time of 28:36.
None of the three teams had enough runners to score. Stephanie Ardabell was the fourth girl to finish with a time of 26:53 with Savannah Ardabell ninth in 29:40 and Stephanie Jones 12th in 30:56.
Girls cross country
Brownsville 15, Washington 50; Burgettstown 15, Washington 50; Brownsville 21, Burgettstown 34 – The Prexies didn’t have enough runners to score, but the Lady Falcons had enough to defeat the Lady Blue Devils for a triangular sweep at Washington Park.
Brownsville’s Charhea Strickler was second in 23:19 and teammate Kayla Brumley was fifth in 24:41.
Teammate Kaila Shumar trailed by 10 seconds and Kelsey Johnson was seventh in 25:02. Amber Simcoke was ninth with a time of 25:49.
Boys golf
Mount Pleasant 206, Laurel Highlands 209 – A day after competing in the individual qualifiers, Mount Pleasant edged out a victory over Laurel Highlands at Norvelt Golf Course in Division I, Section 2 action.
The Vikings Jordan Jones had the low round of the day with a 38, while teammates Dylan Firmstone (41), Mike Bando (42) and Zach Heide (42) carded impressive rounds.
Nate Nesser shot a 39 for the Mustangs, with teammates Ben Thorn (41), Ben Sutton (42) and Zac Heide (42) keeping Laurel Highlands close.
Eric Holzer (43) closed the scoring for the Vikings, who raised their record to 9-2 in the section and 9-3 overall. Alex Ashton (43) and Dave Byers (44) closed the scoring for Laurel Highlands (6-5, 8-5).
The Vikings will be back in action Thursday as they travel to Duck Hollow to face Albert Gallatin, while the Mustangs host Ringgold at Duck Hollow.
Uniontown 211, Southmoreland 221 – Chris Perrotta’s 41 gave him medalist honors for the first time in his career as Uniontown defeated Southmoreland at Duck Hollow.
Ben Sampson (42), Chris Steele (42), Mason Fordyce (43) and Cody Nypaver (43) closed the scoring for the Red Raiders. Von Rhodes (42), Andrew Dzambo (43) and Chip Smith (44) keep the Scotties in the match.
Daniel Wright (46) and Josh Schwartz (46) were the final two scores for Southmoreland.
Uniontown (5-6, 7-6) will be on the road Thursday at Pleasant Valley Country Club when it hosts Connellsville. Southmoreland falls to 1-10 in the section and 1-11 overall.
Belle Vernon 197, Albert Gallatin 232 – Led by Bo Lustig’s even par 36, the Belle Vernon golfers defeated Albert Gallatin for their 13th win without a loss and 11th win in Division 1, Section 2 at Willowbrook Golf Course.
Also for BV, Nolan Russell shot a round of 37, Tyler Lustig was at 39, Kyle Naden at 41 and Dave Johnson at 44.
Mike Petrun shot a round of 40 to lead Albert Gallatin, followed by Taylor Barnickel at 41, Caleb Voithofer at 43, Mark Bartock at 51, and Brandon Sutton at 57.
Albert Gallatin is 1-10 for the season.
Connellsville 199, Ringgold 200 – At Cedarbrook Golf Course, the Falcon golfers took the early lead and held on to edge Ringgold 199 to 200 in Division 1, Section 2 action.
Rounds of 37 by Mike Herman and 38 by John Leonard were key to Connellsville’s victory. Additional Falcon scores were: Cody Ward at 40, Jesse Salyers at 39, and Jarret Gallentine at 45.
Mike Yavorsky led Ringgold with a round of 34, followed by Rico Rodriguez at 42, Alex Allen at 40, David Manchewka at 41 and Connor Kane at 43 .
Connellsville is 4-7 overall and in section competition, while Ringgold is 6-5 in the section.
Frazier 190, Charleroi 239 – The Frazier Commodores had two golfers shoot even par 36 at Linden Hall Golf Course as they won for the eighth time in 11 matches.
Tyler Rock had three birdies in a round of 36, while Zachary Lash scored two birdies in a round of 36 for the Commodores. Nick Hawranko and Matt Adams were only two strokes behind with one birdie each. Dustin Lerde shot a round of 42 and Craig Rebovich shot a round of 48.
Eric Anderson led Charleroi at 42, followed by Kirk Melenyzer at 47, Martin Maytas and Derek Sergi each at 48, Josh Mathers at 53 and Evan Wysocharski at 56.
Boys soccer
Geibel Catholic 3, South Allegheny 2 – Geibel Catholic benefited from Max Kovalchuk’s hat trick to pick up the win over South Allegheny in Section 1-A play.
The Gators were up 2-1 at halftime after two Kovalchuk goals. Kovalchuk picked up the game winning goal in the second half.
Geibel travels to California on Thursday at 7 p.m. for a Section 1-A match.
Baldwin 2, Laurel Highlands 1 – Baldwin’s Ackonenglo James had the Highlanders two goals as they defeated Laurel Highlands in Section 4-AAA play at Laurel Highlands.
Baldwin got on the board first at 11:25 of the first half when James put one past Laurel Highlands’ goalkeeper Jordan Merchbaker.
Chase Frankehouser tied the game at one with 30:24 left in the game, but James scored the winning goal at 8:24 to improved Baldwin to 3-6 in section play.
Merchbaker had five saves for the Mustangs and Sean Flaherty had eight for the Highlanders.
Laurel Highlands drops to 7-2-2 in the section and will host Mount Lebanon on Saturday at 6 p.m.
South Park 18, Uniontown 0 – Host South Park scored 12 first half goals in a Section 3-AA win over Uniontown. Josh Tolentino had a hat trick for the Eagles. Matt Smithburger, Joe Gentlecore, and Anthony Sparks shared time as goaltenders for Uniontown (1-8, 0-7).
Girls tennis
Connellsville 5, Southmoreland 0 – Connellsville had a good day in non-section action against Southmoreland at Connellsville.
The Lady Falcons Laura Husband opened up play with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Bri Pocratsky in No. 1 singles. Caitlyn Anderson and Rachelle Wiltrout picked up straight set wins for the Lady Falcons (1-9, 3-9).
Alyssa Augustine and Casey Nicholson picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win over Christina Couser and Jenn Patton in No. 1 doubles action.
Lyndsey Boors and Lauren Hoffer defeated Kaitlyn Figg and Annika Miller 6-1, 7-5.
Connellsville will be back in action on Thursday when it travels to Hempfield for a Section 1-AAA match. Southmoreland falls to 5-8 overall.
Girls volleyball
Altoona 3, Geibel Catholic 2 – The Lady Gators suffered their first loss of the year to Altoona in a non-section match at Geibel Catholic.
Altoona took the first game 25-21, but Geibel bounced back to win the second 25-20. Altoona took the third game 25-17, but Geibel won the fourth 25-19 to force and fifth and deciding game.
Altoona (5-2) won 15-13 to win a hard fought victory. Carly Ciarochi had 12 kills, 13 service points, six aces and four blocks.
Marney Hillen had 12 kills and Ally Robinson had nine. Julianne Speeney led Geibel in assists with 24 and Emily Solan had 16. Maria Ross had 13 service points.
Geibel (6-0, 6-1) will host Frazier on Thursday in a Section 5-A contest.
Connellsville 3, Albert Gallatin 0 – Connellsville had an impressive effort in defeating Albert Gallatin in Section 2-AAA play at Albert Gallatin.
The Lady Falcons won 25-7, 25-9 and 27-25 to pick up the sweep. Albert Gallatin (0-6, 0-7) will host Upper St. Clair on Thursday in a section match.
Laurel Highlands 3, Uniontown 0 – Laurel Highlands continues to dominate in Section 7-AA action as it defeated Uniontown at Laurel Highlands.
The Fillies won 25-14, 25-7 and 25-6 over the Lady Raiders, who fell to 0-5 in the section and 2-7 overall. Demi Phillipy had nine kills, eight digs and three aces. Malleri Hardison had 13 kills and Jessica Zavatchen was Laurel Highlands assist leader with 26.
Zavatchen had three blocks and seven aces for the Fillies, who remained undefeated at 5-0 in the section and 7-0 overall. Sophomore Janelle Cooper was the service points leader for Laurel Highlands with 15.
Katie Patek had 13 digs for Uniontown and teammate Mallory Sanner had 12 digs. The Lady Raiders will travel to Beth-Center on Thursday in a Section 7-AA match.
Frazier 3, California 0 – Frazier had an impressive showing against California in Section 5-A play at California.
Frazier won by scores of 25-9, 25-10 and 25-22. Amanda Pato had 14 assists for the Lady Commodores and Gena Keebler knocked home six kills and nine service points.
Jessica Wilson had 13 service points and Caitlyn Fidel was the blocks leader with five.
Frazier will be action again on Thursday at Geibel Catholic in a Section 5-A contest, while California (3-3, 3-5) hosts Mapletown.
Beth Center 3, Brownsville 0 – Host Beth Center (5-1, 6-1) swept Brownsville (2-6, 2-4) by scores of 25-16, 26-24, and 25-14 in Section 7-AA.
For Beth Center, Ashley Neifert had 10 kills and nine service points, Chelsea Ratica eight kills, Dana Smith nine service points, and Jessica Dzamba seven kills.
Cori Walker led Brownsville with 12 service points and two digs.
Carmichaels 3, Mapletown 2 – Host Carmichaels rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Mapletown (0-8, 0-4) in Section 6-A.
Mapletown the first two sets by scores of 25-19 and 26-24, but Carmichaels won the next three sets by scores of 25-23, 25-18, and 15-8.
For Mapletown, Lacey Matthews had six kills and four aces, Kaitlyn Novak three kills and 11 aces and Miranda Shippley had eight assists.
Women’s soccer
California 1, Edinboro 0 – The Vulcans picked up a win over Edinboro in PSAC-West action at California.
Chaning Wimer scored for the Vulcans at 56:24 of the second half to give California a 1-0 lead that was good enough for goalkeeper Erin Cook, who had five saves.
Lisa Bartolowits was in goal for the Fighting Scots (0-5-1, 3-5-1) and had nine saves on 10 shots on goal.
The Vulcans (2-3-1, 4-3-2) had six corner kicks and 19 shots.
