Gelet named to Seton Hill University Hall of Fame
The 1981 Geibel Catholic graduate played basketball and tennis at Seton Hill, but really made a name for herself after graduation as a high school basketball coach. Gelet was named the Associated Press Pennsylvania Small Schools Coach of the Year for the 1996-97 season after leading the Clairton boys basketball team to the WPIAL Class A Championship, as well as honored by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Tribune Review and McKeesport Daily News as their Coach of the Year, to become on the second woman in WPIAL history to coach a boy’s team and the first to win a game.
Gelet had a three-year record of 51-26 as the Bears coach and a consecutive WPIAL title in 1997-98, and had the rare dual position as girls coach in the 1998-99 season with an 11-10 mark.
Gelet left Clairton to take over as women’s basketball coach at the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg in 1999, the same year she was named a Dapper Dan Sportsman of the Year nominee.
The Bobcats had a record-breaking 24-6 record in 2005-06 and a fifth-consecutive appearance in the AMCC Championship under Gelet’s tutelage. The all-time victories leader at the school with a 9-year record of 162-89, Gelet has been named the AMCC Coach of the Year twice, 2000-01 and 2001-02.
She has worked for the Clairton School District since 1993 where she is a special education teacher.
