Lapkowicz leads Mikes’ win in triumphant return

3 min read

“It was a nice win for us,” Mikes coach Mike Bosnic said. “I really hope this is a turning point for us, now that we have Joby back. He really is a special player.” Lapkowicz, who was 15-21 with 264 yards and four touchdown passes, gave the Mighty Mikes the game winning score on a seven yard pass to Josh Green on fourth down at the 4:17 mark in the fourth quarter.

“I wanted to get the ball in the end zone,” said Lapkowicz. “I was going to run it when I saw the corner come off the coverage and Green open in the end zone.”

For Lapkowicz and other seniors it was especially nice as it was their first win over Jefferson-Morgan after going 0-3 the previous seasons.

The Mighty Mikes started Jon Krall, but were unable to make much happen as the Rockets got on the board first, marching the ball down to the fourth yard line where Ryan Knight plunged into the end zone at the 4:41 mark of the first.

Lapkowicz entered the game at the 4:45 mark of the first quarter, and began where he left off last year, executing a 15-yard quarterback option that fired up the Mikes sideline.

After being sacked three times through the first quarter, Lapkowicz showed he was back for good with a 35-yard pass to Josh Green that set up an eventual 22-yard touchdown pass to Zach Mundell on a second down and 17.

Lapkowicz connected with Bill Hyatt for the two-point conversion that gave the Mikes an 8-7 lead going into half.

Lapkowicz came out firing in the third quarter, connecting with a wide open Hyatt on a 52-yard bomb to put the lead at 14-7.

The Rockets were not to be deterred, closing the gap with a five yard quarterback keeper by Brandon Kozich, and taking the lead with a Hans Lubich two yard run at the 2:03 mark in the third quarter.

Lapkowicz connected with Green for a54 yard touchdown pass to once again give Carmichaels the lead, only to have the Rockets come right back with a Lubich seven yard touchdown run to put give the Rockets a 26-22 lead at the 7:48 mark.

After Lapkowicz touchdown pass, Brent Moskola was tackled a yard short on a fourth and 19 to preserve the Mighty Mike’s win.

Green had 132 receiving yards and two touchdowns, while Hyatt had 72 yards and one touchdown.

Lubich racked up 100 yards and two touchdown runs for the Rockets.

“It was a good battle,” said Rocket coach Jan Haiden. “Unfortunately we just made some mistakes and when you do that you can’t win. But I’m still proud of this team, they worked hard.”
