Belle Vernon’s Bo and Tyber Lustig advanced to the WPIAL Division 1 individual boys golf finals by placing in the top 12 of the semifinals Monday at Willowbrook Golf Course. Tyber placed second overall with an 18-hole score of 74, while younger brother Bo shot a 79 to finish ninth. Tyber went out on the front nine with a 39, but came back with a 35 to fall one stroke behind Indiana’s Sean Sweitheim. Bo had a 42 on the front and came back with 37.
Mount Pleasant’s Jordan Jones was fifth with a 77 and was the last area golfer to make the cut.
The Leopards’ Kyle Naden was 18th place with an 82, and teammate Dave Johnson fired a 95 for 35th place.
Uniontown’s had two golfers in the semifinals in Ben Sampson and Cody Nypaver. Sampson came in 33rd with a 92 and Nypaver finished 38th with a 106.
Connellsville’s Johnny Leonard was the lone Falcon golfer and he carded an 86.
The top 12 will play in the finals at Diamond Run.
WPIAL Division II Individual Semifinals – Two local golfers advanced to the WPIAL finals with a top 12 finish in WPIAL individual semifinals held at Youghiogheny Country Club.
Jefferson-Morgan’s Josh Kokoska placed sixth overall with a 78 and California’s David Beck finished ninth-place with a 78.
Kokoska shot a 38 on the front nine and a 40 on the back nine while Beck shot a 41 on the front and a 37 on the back. Both players are juniors and will play in the finals at Diamond Run.
Frazier 196, Brownsville 232 – The Commodores continued their winning way in Division II, Section 2 play, defeating visiting Brownsville at Linden Hall.
Dustin Lerda (36), Tyler Rock (38) and Zachary Lash (39) led the Frazier attack. Mike Peton’s 42 was the top sore for Brownsville, while teammates Jeramy Kopacko (45) and Jacob Lewis (45) came in second and third, respectively.
Craig Rebovich (40) and Matt Adams (43) closed things out for Frazier (7-2, 10-3). Joe Kromer’s 46 and Paul Tate’s 54 rounded out the scoring for Brownsville (0-8, 0-10).
Boys soccer
Winchester Thurston 4, Geibel Catholic 3 – Max Kovalchuk picked up a hat trick, but the Gators couldn’t get the job done in Section 1-A play at Winchester Thurston.
Winchester Thurston jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the half, and Kovalchuk did his best to keep Geibel (3-6, 4-8-1) in the game with his three goals in the second half.
However, Winchester Thurston (2-8-1) scored a goal in the second to defeat the Gators.
Girls soccer
Uniontown 1, Yough 1 – Double-overtime couldn’t decide a winner in this Section 6-AAA battle at Yough.
The Lady Raiders Jill Grena scored in the first half and Yough tied the game in the second to force overtime.
Waynesburg Central 3, Laurel Highlands 0 – The Lady Raiders defeated Laurel Highlands in Section 6-AAA action at Waynesburg Central.
Rebecca Rohanna got things going in the sixth minute of the first half with a goal for the home team, and Taylor Augustine scored in the 32nd minute off an assist from Abby Toothman. Claire Vehar scored in the 22nd minute of the second half on an assist from Rohanna. Waynesburg improves to 6-3 in the section and 7-6 overall.
Girls tennis
Brownsville 4, Washington 1 – Brownsville won a big Section 1-AA match over Washington at Brownsville.
The Lady Falcons swept the singles with Angie Pelehac winning No. 1 singles over Chaucey Hoffman 6-0, 6-0. Ferrell Jellots defeated Kathy Correa 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, and Brittany Chiovitti won 6-0, 6-1 over Kayla Welling.
Kendall Connors and Erin Ryan picked up a victory in No. 1 doubles for Brownsville with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Brittany Miller and Amanda Smith.
Brownville improves to 8-5 in section play and travels to Derry Wednesday with playoff implications on the line. Washington falls to 2-11 in the section.
Connellsville 4, Greensburg Salem 1 – Connellsville lost its No. 1 singles match but came back to defeat Greensburg Salem in a Section 1-AAA match at Connellsville.
Caitlyn Anderson won the No. 2 singles match for Connellsville (3-10, 5-10) against Kathleen Orr 6-1, 6-3 and Rachelle Wiltrout picked up the third singles match 6-3, 3-6, 7-6, (7-3).
Connellsville’s Alyssa Augustine and Casey Nicholson picked up a 7-5, 6-2 win over Kelsey McGill and Alyssa Muchoney 7-5, 6-2. Lyndsey Boors and Kylie Kern picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win in No. 2 doubles.
Volleyball
Geibel Catholic 3, Mapletown 0 – Julianne Speeney had 29 assists and 18 service points to lift the Lady Gators past the Lady Maples in Section 5-A action.
Maria Ross added 13 service points, while Carly Ciarochi posted 11 kills and five blocks.
Geibel (8-1, 8-0) won by scores of 25-9, 25-5 and 25-12. Thursday Mapletown travels to Frazier.
Ringgold 3, Albert Gallatin 1 – Ringgold defeated Albert Gallatin in Section 2-AAA action at Ringgold.
The Lady Rams won the first game 25-18, fell 25-19 in the second, won the third 25-23 and the fourth 25-18.
Shelby Trump had 10 kills for the Lady Colonials and Claire Melahov had five. Sarah Ferro had 28 digs and Rachel Ferro contributed 18. Sam Matlick’s six kills and 13 digs paced Albert Gallatin.
Albert Gallatin (0-7, 0-8) travels to Brownsville today for a non-section match.
Beth-Center 3, Waynesburg Central 2 – The Lady Bulldogs won a five-game match in a Section 7-AA battle at Waynesburg.
Beth-Center won the first game 25-17, but lost Game 2 26-28. The visitors won the third game 25-20 and were defeated 25-19 in Game 4. The Lady Bulldogs won the fifth and deciding game 15-9.
Becca Phipps had 17 assists for Waynesburg and Jennifer Phillips had eight aces. Emily Bosworth led the Waynesburg (4-5, 7-5) attack with 16 kills and 16 aces.
Lindsey Coffey had nine kills for the visitors and Alicia Statvula was Beth-Center’s leader in service points with 15. Ashley Neifert had 16 kills. The Lady Bulldogs (7-1, 8-1) travel to Belle Vernon today.
Laurel Highlands 3, Washington 0 – The Fillies remained atop Section 7-AA with a three game sweep over Washington.
Laurel Highlands (10-0) won 25-17, 25-18 and 25-14 as Malleri Hardison had nine kills and 11 service points. Jessica Zavatchen led the Fillies in assists with 21 and also had 10 digs. Paige Wolbert had 11 service points.
Men’s soccer
Seton Hill 2, California, (Pa.) 1 – California lost a tough game in non-conference action at Seton Hill.
The Vulcans (5-3-2) took a 1-0 lead into halftime but Seton Hill (5-4-1) responded with two goals in the second to take the game.
