21st Fayette County Open begins Thursday
The Fayette County Open is going back to basics, of sorts, when the 21st edition begins play Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at Uniontown Country Club. The opening round returns to Uniontown Country Club, as does Friday’s second round to Pleasant Valley Country Club with golfers teeing it up at 12:30 p.m. The changes come in the final two rounds with the third round at Springdale Golf Club on Saturday with a 10 a.m. start and the final round played at Duck Hollow Golf Club on Sunday with a 9 a.m. tee time.
“With Springdale and Duck Hollow, we get back to the original rotation,” explained Bernie Wydo, who along with George Knapp are directing this year’s tournament. “We’ll see what happens and just go from there in the future.”
It seems fitting Wydo and Knapp are the go-to guys for the Open since both have played in every tournament.
The field has 45 golfers with nine playing in the senior field as well. Another five golfers are just playing in the two-round senior competition.
John Lenkey is the defending champion while Marty Kurta is the defending seniors champ.
“Potentially, there are some under par rounds. I think it will be a tighter race for the championship,” said Wydo, a former champion. “I think it will be one of the better Opens.
“It’s a good mix of ages, absolutely. I think there’s 8 or 9 guys in the 18-24 age bracket, some in the 30s, a few in the 40s and some seniors. These guys all have an interest in it. It’s the idea they’re not afraid to go out and post a score.”
