Calvaresi grabs Fayette County Open lead as Dzambo falls back
BULLSKIN TWP. – There were some dramatic changes in the leading positions after Friday’s second round of the Fayette County Golf Tournament at Pleasant Valley Country Club. Pete Calvaresi was the new leader after shooting a round of 37-38-75 on the PVCC’s par 71 layout. Calvaresi led Mike Revak (36-37-73) by one stroke, while John Kingora (38-35-73) was two strokes behind. Also in the hunt were John Lenkey (36-39-75) at three strokes back, Ryan Bashour (34-42-76) and Santino Marchitello (36-38-74) both at four strokes back.
Justin Goletz shot the best round of the day with a round of 37-35-72 that brought him from nine strokes off the pace in the opening round to five strokes back entering the third round that begins at 10 a.m. today at Springdale Golf Course.
The final round will be played Sunday at Duck Hollow. The first group is scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m.
Also five strokes behind at 151 were Scott Bush (39-39-78), Jason Kurnot (37-36-73), and Chris Taylor (38-42-80).
The most dramatic falls from contention were first-round leader Pete Dzambo III (46-40-86) and Fred David (42-58-100).
Dzambo’s tough day was started when he took 12 strokes on the par four number 3 hole. He stands 10 strokes off the pace, while David fell from one stroke back on Thursday to 25 strokes back at the end of Friday’s round.
Calvaresi, Revak, Kingora and Lenkey are all former tournament winners, and Calvaresi said he looks forward to going head-to-head with his challengers.
“I’ll rely on my age, experience, and sheer fortitude to try to get it done,” said Calvaresi, who admitted he didn’t think his round at PVCC would be good enough to take the lead.
“I had my C game today. But on the back nine, I had good holes at 14, 15, 16, and 17 before taking two putts on 18. The course played pretty tough. With five holes to play, I reminded myself `don’t quit’,” Calvaresi said.
When asked about the next two rounds, Calvaresi said, “I’m comfortable with those courses. I grew up playing those two.”
Revak attributed his round of 73 to “just missing in the right spots when I missed. There were a lot of places where you could one putt or three-putt. I had here tough holes in the middle with a bogey at 8, double bogey at 9, and bogey at 10. But I birdied two other holes and had a lot of pars.”
Bush said the Pleasant Valley greens were “awfully fast but very good. I just missed a 10-foot putt for eagle on 11, and had tough holes with double bogeys on 7 and 17.”
Marchitello was glad to be in the hunt. He’s familiar with Pleasant Valley from competing in the county event for several years. “I made no big mistakes and consistently stayed in play. I’m very glad to get this course out of the way.”
With the best round of the day at 72, Goletz said he was glad to be able to play the PVCC layout on Wednesday. “There are no other greens like these in Fayette County,” he said. “But they roll true if you keep the ball on line.”
Taylor was by far the fashion leader of the day, attired in a black baseball cap with a gold letter P, a black shirt and gold pants. Although he remained in contention, he said he struggled with two double bogeys and a triple bogey.
Following the leaders, other two-day totals were: George Knapp, 153; Ron Jones, 154; Marcus Ondra, 154; Pete Dzambo III, 156; Jeremy Enslen, 157; Zach Rockwell, 157; David Smithburger, 157; Jeremy Boskovitch, 159; Seth Rockwell, 160; Pete Dzambo, 161; Bob Hixon, 161; Bob Tajc, 162; Marcus Wingrove, 162; Bernie Wydo, 162; Greg Moore, 163; Josh John, 163; Jim Hayes, 163; Dan Glover, 163; Bill McHugh, 164; Ian Picosky, 164; Jarrod Bartok, 165; Nate Nesser, 165; Mike Smith, 166; Bill Hunt, 168; Matt Pramuk, 168; Bryan Lipchinsky, 169; Kevin Muehring, 169; Fred David, 171; Jim Manges, 171; Tom Licciardi, 171; Jerry Sefcheck, 171; Travis Attaway, 173; Tony Lent, 175; Rick Zaph, 185. .
