Raiders’ depth key in section victory
California’s Dave Beck matched Waynesburg Central’s Loren Dukate and Emily Rohanna, with all golfers shooting 5-over 41, Friday afternoon, but the rest of the Raiders scored 47 or better for a 221-231 Division II, Section 8 victory at Cedarbrook Golf Course. Rick Kalsey shot a 45 for Waynesburg Central with both Ben Virgin and Matt King finishing with 47. Aaron Haywood’s 49 wasn’t used.
The Trojans’ Dominic Roach finished with a 45, one shot ahead of teammate Alex Roach. Tyler Van Olst carded a 49 and Zach Edmiston rounded out the scoring with a 50. Phil Langley’s 50 wasn’t used.
Waynesburg Central (3-0, 3-0) takes a break from section action Monday when the Raiders host Chartiers-Houston at Rohanna’s Golf Course. California is now 1-1 in the section and 2-1 overall.
Jefferson-Morgan 199, Beth-Center 238 – The Rockets kept pace with Waynesburg Central with a Division II, Section 8 victory at Carmichaels Golf Club.
Jefferson-Morgan improves to 3-0 in the section as well as overall. Beth-Center falls to 0-2 in the section and 0-3 overall.
Josh Kokoska, Zach Berkstresser and Alex Rush all shot even-par 37 for the Rockets. Joe DeFrancesco finished with a 41 and Brandon Faieta carded a 47. Brendon Edwards’ 48 wasn’t used.
Alex Antonio was the low man for the Bulldogs with a 3-over 40. Austin Smith shot a 41 and Tyler Sabatula finished with a 49. Logan Hunt had a 51 and Brock Hartley rounded out the scoring with a 57. Matt Sabatini’s 64 wasn’t used.
Carmichaels 217, Brownsville 294 – The Falcons sliced 50 strokes off their last match, but the Mikes had a solid performance for a Division II, Section 8 victory at Carmichaels Golf Club.
The Mikes’ Brandon Wolfe was medalist with a 3-over 40. Christian Berardi shot a 42 and Zach Wolfe finished with a 43. Jeff Swift added a 44 and Trevor Robinson rounded out the scoring with a 48. Alex Watson’s 54 wasn’t used.
Nick Calvaresi was the low man for the Falcons (0-3, 0-3) with a 46. Jacob Murray shot a 55 and Jared Gibson carded a 60. Aaron Golembiewski finished with a 62 and Tyler Edwards closed the scoring rounds with a 71.
“The Greene County Country Club greens are a lot tighter than at Carmichaels,” Brownsville coach Chris McManus said of his team’s improvement. “They’re coming. One hole crushes them.
“It’s going to be a learning curve. As we go forward, I think we’ll be okay.”
Carmichaels improves to 2-1 in the section.
Belle Vernon 193, Connellsville 245 – The Leopards kept rolling along, finishing the first week of the Division I, Section 2 schedule undefeated with a road victory at Pleasant Valley Country Club over the Falcons.
Belle Vernon improved to 2-0 in the section as well as overall, while Connellsville slipped to 1-2.
Belle Vernon’s Bo Lustig was medalist with a 1-over 35. Tyber Lustig carded a 3-over 37. Kirby Manown and Kyle Naden both shot 39, and Tim Moore closed the scoring with a 43. Brad Antal’s 44 wasn’t used.
Johnny Leonard was the low man for the Falcons with a 38. Tyler Stillwagon finished with a 41, and Eric Harrer carded a 42. Luke Giles’ 63 and Tyler Broadwater’s 61 rounded out the scoring. Adam Echard’s 76 was thrown out.
Greensburg C.C. 199, Geibel Catholic 218 – The Gators didn’t fare well on the road at Mt. Odin Golf Course with three Centurions shooting 40 or better for a Division II, Section 2 victory.
Greensburg C.C. improves to 2-0 while Geibel Catholic slips to 0-2.
The Centurions’ Kevin Hickey was medalist with a 2-under 37. Erik Francken and Janista Numpho both shot 40, and Regan Queale was one shot off their score. Jason Chang’s 43 closed the scoring rounds. Tom Owen’s 45 wasn’t used.
Shawn Erdely was low for the Gators with a 4-over 37. Mike Noonan carded a 42. Ryan Lucostic, Mike Spegar and Patrick Herbert all shot 45. Ryan Robson’s 47 wasn’t used. Geibel hosts Charleroi Tuesday afternoon at Pleasant Valley Country Club.
