Laurel Highlands sweeps Uniontown
Laurel Highlands cross country swept Uniontown Wednesday at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus to take full control of Section 2-AAA. The Fillies pulled out a 28-29 victory over the Lady Raiders while the Mustangs won, 28-31.
Uniontown’s Tommy Kegg won the boys race in 18:31 and teammate Nathan Wagner was close behind with a time of 18:36. The Mustangs’ Justin Kostelnik broke up the Red Raiders’ top three, coming in at 18:46.
Teammate Anthony Cecchini came in with Kostelnik to grab fourth place with a time of 18:47.
Torin Kelley (18:59) grabbed the fifth spot for Uniontown, but it was all Laurel Highlands after that as the Mustangs grabbed the next five spots.
Michael Cecchini (19:00), Ryan Teets (19:01), Ian Sunyecz (19:10), Adam Ennis (19:31) and Alec Sunyecz (19:34) put the Mustangs in contention for the section crown at 7-0. Uniontown falls to 6-1.
Uniontown’s Julie Friend won the girls race in 21:56 while Laurel Highlands’ Ellie Monaghan was second in 22:37. Rachel Diamond (23:45) and Caycee Guthrie (23:54) took the third and fourth spots to put the Lady Raiders in a good spot.
The Fillies took the same approach as the Mustangs by grabbing the next four places. Amanda Parker led the group with a time of 24:05. Teammates Brandy Liptock (24:11), Anna Howard (24:17) and Rebecca Felix (24:19) put Laurel Highlands in a good spot for the section title.
Uniontown’s Carol Rhodes (24:24) and Laurel Highlands’ Claire Johnson (25:23) took ninth and tenth respectively. Laurel Highlands improves to 7-0 while Uniontown drops to 6-1.
Southmoreland 4, McGuffey 1 – Southmoreland took four out of five matches to pick up a Section 1-AA victory at McGuffey.
The Lady Scotties’ Kaylie Schroyer got Southmoreland off on the right foot with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Alyssa Kuhn. Teammate Christina Causer defeated Abbey Newton 6-4, 6-1 to win No. 2 singles.
In doubles action, Southmoreland’s Sarah Albright and Rachel Zaffina defeated Lan Grishth and Chelsea Hubley 6-3, 7-5. Karyssa Gault and Cassie Eiford made it a clean sweep in doubles action with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lacey Blakemore and Kara Silbers.
Southmoreland (8-4) returns to play Monday against Brownsville in a section battle. McGuffey falls to 7-4.
Geibel Catholic 4, South Allegheny 0 – The Gators picked up a shut out victory over South Allegheny in Section 1-A action.
Max Kovalchuk and Collin Roble scored two goals each in the Gators’ (5-3, 7-3) victory. Kovalchuk scored in the 85th minute of the first half and 41st minute in the second while Roble scored 8:25 into the first and in the 65th minute of the second.
The Gators will host California today at 5 p.m. in a section battle. South Allegheny falls to 1-5 in section play and 1-6 overall.
Connellsville 3, Uniontown 0 – The Lady Falcons’ Allison Panzella scored two goals as Connellsville shut out Uniontown in Section 6-AAA play.
Panzella scored at 4:17 of the first half and with 5:02 left in the second for Connellsville (5-3, 5-5). Jessica Dolde added a goal at 21:58 of the second. Ashlyn Fratto had five saves for the Lady Falcons.
Uniontown’s Sarah Mayse had 20 saves. Connellsville host Laurel Highlands Saturday in a section game.
Brownsville 3, Southmoreland 1 – The Lady Falcons picked up a non-section victory over Southmoreland.
After winning the fist game 25-15, Brownsville lost the second 25-19. The Lady Falcons rebounded to win the next two games by scores of 25-11 and 25-17. Emily Konter had 15 service points, five kills and 12 assists.
Kermen Bruschi 13 service points and four kills. Gina Perry chipped in with 14 service points, four aces, two kills and one block.
Stephanie Crable had four service points, two kills and three assists. Chevelle Stoken had six service points and two kills. Carly Peton had four service points, three kills and one block.
Brownsville (2-4, 6-5) faces McGuffey today in a section battle.
Frazier 205, Charleroi 241 – Frazier won a Division II, Section 2 contest at Linden Hall over Charleroi.
The Commodores’ Tyler Rock and Nick Hawranko shared medalist honors with a 39. Frazier’s Robert Gondura and DJ Hudik fired a 42 respectively. Zach Smailch’s 43 rounded out the scoring for Frazier (6-4, 7-7).
Brandon Konek shot a 46 to lead the Cougars (2-8, 5-11). Teammate Martin Maytas carded a 47 and Zach Wright shot a 48.
Lake Erie 2, Waynesburg University 1 – The Yellow Jackets scored the first goal, but the Storm rallied for a win in non-conference play.
Amy Macurdy scored 11 minutes to give Waynesburg a 1-0 lead. Keeper Katrina Kelly made five saves for the Yellow Jackets (3-5).
Edinboro 1, California (Pa.) 0 – The No. 17 ranked Vulcans dropped a tough decision on the road in PSAC-West action.
The Vulcans (5-2, 7-3) was held scoreless for the first time this year.
Bethany 3, Waynesburg University 0 – The Bison secured a sweep in PAC action over the Yellow Jackets.
Bethany won by scores of 25-22, 25-13 and 25-19. Waynesburg falls to 1-6 in conference play and 3-10 overall.
Luke named PSAC Co-Athlete of the Week – California University of Pennsylvania sophomore Dianne Luke was rewarded for winning the William-Bing Beall Classic by the PSAC.
