Leopards beat Rams, secure second consecutive Division I, Section 2 title
Belle Vernon secured its second consecutive Division I, Section 2 crown Monday, cruising past Ringgold, 194-220, on Cedarbrook Golf Course’s Red course. Belle Vernon finishes the section campaign with a 13-1 record, improving to 14-1 overall. Ringgold slips to 6-8 in the section as well as overall.
The Leopards’ Kyle Naden was medalist with a 1-over 35. Tyber Lustig shot a 37, and Bo Lustig finished with a 39. Kirby Manown carded a 40, and Tim Moore closed the scoring with a 42. Brad Antal’s 43 was thrown out.
The Rams’ Mike Yavorsky shot a 38 for his squad’s low score.
The Lustig brothers and Yavorsky will play in the WPIAL Boys Individual Golf Championships Wednesday at Butler Country Club.
Frazier 215, Derry 234 – The Commodores entertained the Trojans at Linden Hall Golf Course, and came away with a non-section victory.
Frazier evens its overall record at 8-8.
Frazier’s D.J. Hudik was medalist with a 5-over 41. Tyler Rock shot a 42, and Nick Hawranko finished with a 43. Robert Gondura had a 44 with Zach Smalich’s 45 rounding out the final total. Wyatt Tidholm’s 52 wasn’t used.
Greyson Latimer was the low man for Derry (5-11, 2-11) with an 8-over 44.
Southmoreland 4, Brownsville 1 – With two Section 1-AA matches remaining, the Lady Scots remained in the playoff hunt with a victory over the visiting Lady Falcons.
Southmoreland improves to 8-4 in the section and 9-4 overall, and will take a break from section action today with a match against Connellsville. Brownsville falls to 2-8 in the section as well as overall.
Angie Pelehac defeated Kaylie Schroyer, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1 singles for Brownsville’s lone victory.
The Lady Scots’ Christina Causer didn’t drop a game in her straight sets victory at No. 2 singles against Kendall Connors. Chelsea Pence defeated Brownsville’s Alyssa Conner at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
Southmoreland’s No. 1 doubles team of Sarah Albright and Karyssa Gault defeated Brittany Remington and Breann Plummer, 6-3, 6-1, and the No. 2 doubles team of Cassie Eiford and Marissa Kohl beat Lexie Rohlf and Payton Ferguson, 6-1, 6-0.
Geibel Catholic 9, East Allegheny 1 – Megan Mammarella had her first four-goal game of the season, and the Lady Gators positioned themselves for a late run at a Section 6-AA playoff berth.
Geibel improves to 6-2-0 in the section and 8-4-0 overall. East Allegheny falls to 0-7-0 in the section and 1-8-0 overall.
Mammarella scored three goals in the first half with the fourth coming early in the second half. Brittany Core assisted on the first two goals and Rebecca Sandor on the last two.
Sandor had four-point game by adding a pair of goals. Core and Hannah Lazuka both scored goals with both tallies coming off Mammarella assists. Caroline Hanabeck scored the ninth goal for the Lady Gators.
Megan Beck stopped all three shots she faced in the first half, and Katrina Tokay turned aside two shots in the second half.
Belle Vernon 1, Connellsville 0 – The Lady Leopards’ Kylie Heck scoring the only goal of the Section 6-AAA match at 24:12 of the first period, and goaltender Lindsey Lash made the lead stand for a key road victory.
Belle Vernon (10-2-2) keeps pace with Southmoreland (8-1-2) atop the section standings at 8-0-2. The Lady Scots shut out Albert Gallatin, 9-0. Connellsville (7-7-0) remains alone in third place, one match ahead of Waynesburg Central at 6-4-0. The Lady Raiders (5-5-0, 6-7-0) lost to Laurel Highlands, 1-0. Yough (7-6-0) moved into a tie with Waynesburg with a 2-0 win over Uniontown.
Despite the loss, Connellsville controls its destiny for securing the third and final playoff spot.
“We have Albert Gallatin, Southmoreland, Waynesburg and Yough left. (A) 10-5 record should be good enough to get in (the playoffs), so we need to finish 3-1,” said Connellsville coach Jeff Puskar.
By Puskar’s account, Connellsville had a couple good scoring chances, while the Lady Leopards had three or four. Lady Falcon goalkeeper Ashlyn Fratto was busy in the net, making 22 saves.
Lash turned aside three shots to preserve the tight victory.
Charleroi 3, Carmichaels 2 – The Lady Mikes lost the first two sets, but rallied to tie the match before the visiting Lady Cougars closed out the non-section victory by winning the fifth set, 15-6.
Charleroi won the first two sets, 25-19, 26-24, and Carmichaels tied the match by winning the third set, 26-24, and the fourth, 25-22.
Cameron Grimes led the Lady Mikes with 18 service points. Kim Rowan finished with 10. Marissa Krall had six kills and Jessica Hair added five.
Carmichaels (3-6) hosts Jefferson-Morgan tonight in a Section 6-A match.
Washington & Jefferson 6, Chatham 0 – Norwin graduate Chrissy Marcius netted her first collegiate hat trick to lead the Presidents to a PAC victory at Chatham. Laurel Highlands grad Molly Macioce assisted on the first goal of the match scored by Elizabeth Bendick.
Washington & Jefferson evens its mark in the PAC at 1-1, while improving to 4-5-2 overall.
California University of Pa. Invitational – The Vulcans’ Bryan Bustamante shot a 1-under 71 in the second of two rounds at Cedarbrook Golf Course to lead the host team to a second-place finish in the 13-team field.
Indiana (Pa.) won the team title with a 9-over 581. California was second with a 24-over 600 with Clarion four strokes behind in third place.
Bustamante shot a 5-over 76 in the first round Sunday, rebounding Monday to finish in a four-way tie for eighth place with a 4-over 147. Justin Newbauer finished with 151 (76-75) with Paul Babashanian, Austin Stoddard and James Currie all shooting 10-over 153.
Clarion’s Jared Schmader was medalist with a 3-under 140 (66-74).
California concludes its fall season at the two-day PSAC Championships on Oct. 17-18 at the Hershey Links.
