Martinak grabs lead in TD Club

2 min read

It would have been easy to explain why D.J. Martinak and his California Trojan teammates might have been nervous for last week’s football game against Mapletown. After all, the Trojans were playing the first game in their brand new stadium, so nerves could have been an issue.

For Martinak, though, his case of the nerves must have been nervous energy, as the senior quarterback scored four touchdowns to propel himself into the lead in the Herald-Standard Touchdown Club rankings.

The 24 points helped Martinak reach 74 for the season and open a 20-point lead over three players who are tied for second place.

Hudnell Caldwell of Geibel Catholic, Hans Lubich of Jefferson-Morgan and Uniontown’s Arnold Walker share second place with 54 points on nine touchdowns each.

Anthonie Farrar of Carmichaels is alone in fifth place with 50 points on eight touchdowns and one two-point conversion.

The Herald-Standard Touchdown Club honors the top scorers in high school football among area teams. At the end of the season, the player who has scored the most points will receive a trophy and his school will display the Touchdown Club’s traveling plaque in its trophy case for the next year.

The second five consists of five players tied with 48 points on eight touchdowns each. Those five are Beth-Center’s Deshan Brown, Belle Vernon’s Matt Green, Geibel Catholic’s Christian Henckel, Frazier’s Chase Kirmeyer and Mapletown’s Jarret Porterfield.

A complete list of area football scorers is on today’s scoreboard page.
