Vikings too much for Falcons
MT. PLEASANT – It was a simple case of Mount Pleasant being bigger and stronger. The Vikings put those advantages to good use Friday night, rolling past Brownsville, 49-0, in Interstate Conference action. Brownsville (1-5, 1-5) dressed only 19 kids with only one senior in uniform. However, head coach Von Braddock was pleased with overall effort of his kids.
“We’re a little beat up, and were playing a lot of young kids. They gave it their best effort,” he said. “We were out-manned. Mount Pleasant is a good football team. We’re trying to build this program the right way. I think in a couple of years with some hard work, we’ll be fine.”
Mount Pleasant (6-0, 6-0) wasted little time taking control of the game. The Vikings took the opening kickoff at their 40. Bryce Ansell ran for seven to his 47. Mike Rosebosky followed with a 15-yard gain to the Brownsville 38. Ansell, who rushed for 122, yards on seven carries, then covered the last 38 yards for the score. Matt Remaley’s extra-point give the Vikes a 7-0 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff Brownsville failed to cover the loose ball and Mount Pleasant took over at the Falcons 46. Two plays later Jimmy Stefancic raced 33-yards for the first of his two scores.
The Vikings forced Brownsville to a three-and-out. The Falcons punted and the Vikings returned the ball to the Falcons’ 8-yard line to set up a first-and-goal. Stefancic scored two plays later on a four-yard run increasing the Vikings lead to 21-0.
The Vikings’ fourth touchdown of the first quarter was set up by a fumble recovery at the Brownsville 32. Derek Mellors passed to Ansell for six. Ansell then carried twice to the Brownsville 15. Spencer Smouse picked up the first of his two scores on the 15-yard run, giving the Vikings a 28-0 lead .
“We came out a took care of business in the first quarter and after that, we just got through the game,” Vikings coach Bo Ruffner said. “The kids did a good job of keeping their focus, practicing hard all week and tonight is just a carryover from what we do during the week.”
The Vikings increased their lead to 35-0 in the first quarter when Ansell scored on a 59-yard run with eight seconds left in the quarter.
The Vikings added one more score before the half on a six-yard run by Smouse making the score 42-0. The Vikes played their reserves through the second half that resulted in one final score in the fourth quarter.
