Sanders strong on ground in Colonials’ win
Laurel Highlands girls cross country came in seventh out of 14 teams at the Gateway Invitational with Elli Monaghan’s time of 24:23 leading the way for the Fillies. Monaghan came in 37th place with teammate Anna Howard coming in second for Laurel Highlands at 44th place. Howard crossed the line in 26:32.
Rebecca Yarish (26:55) came in 48th place and Rebecca Felix (27:15) was 51st. Clairesa Johnson (27:21) was 54th and Alexis Zavalensky (27:25) came in 57th overall.
Anthony Cecchini’s time of 19:23 was good enough for 33rd place as the boys grabbed eighth out of 14. Cecchini’s brother Michael was 34th with a time of 19:24. Justin Koscelnik’s time of 19:45 was good enough for 43rd.
Ryan Peets (19:56) grabbed 50th place while Alec (19:56) and Ian (19:57) grabbed 51st and 52nd place respectively. Vince Agostini’s time of 20:27 garnered 66th place.
Laurel Highlands returns to action Saturday at Schenley Park in the Red, White and Blue Invitational.
Connellsville 21, Southmoreland 39; Southmoreland 26, Connellsville 29
Connellsville and Southmoreland split their season-opening meet Friday, with the Falcons boys team beating the Scotties while the Lady Scots beat the Lady Falcons.
Southmoreland produced both winners, with Robert Smith the overall winner in 17:30 and Rickey Brown taking the girls event in 23:48.
The Connellsville boys won on the strength of taking second through fifth place and placing seven runners in the top 10.
Conversely, the Southmoreland girls won despite Connellsville getting three of the top five finishes.
