Buccaneers scuttle Carmichaels, 35-21
CARMICHAELS – Chartiers-Houston’s offense wasn’t rolling in the first half against Carmichaels Friday night, but once the Buccaneers got going, the night was theirs as they rolled to a 35-21 win. “We felt good at halftime,” said Buccaneers coach Terry Fetsko. “We came into the second half with what we thought were some good adjustments.”
The Buccaneers (2-0) broke a 14-14 tie with a Ryan Scott, 54-yard touchdown run at 6:01 of the third quarter to take a 21-14 lead.
Driving down to the Mighty Mikes’ 16-yard line, the Buccaneers looked to extend their lead at the 11:47 mark of the fourth quarter with a Zach Hamilton 33-yard field goal, but were denied when the kick went wide right.
On the second play of the Mighty Mikes next series, a Jonathan Krall pass was intercepted and returned to the Mikes’ five yard line by Scott who took the snap two plays later for a four-yard touchdown run to ice the game at 10:04 of the fourth quarter.
Scott scored again later on a 5-yard sprint.
The Mighty Mikes (0-2) had taken a lead to end the first half after Krall ran the two-minute offense perfectly from the Buccaneers’ 47-yard line and capped the seven-play drive with a 15-yard completion to Anthony Farrar for a 14-7 lead.
The Buccaneers’ first pass completion resulted in their first penetration into Mighty Mikes’ territory after Seth Bell caught a Daniel Lis pass for a 57-yard pass completion to the 6 for a first-and-goal.
After a false start pushed the Buccaneers defense back five yards, Lis kept the ball for an 11-yard scamper up the middle to give the visitors a 7-0 lead at the 2:21 mark of the first quarter.
The Mikes drove to the Buccaneers 4 yard line on their third drive but were denied points, following a pair of sacks on third and fourth down, respectively.
However, the Mikes tied the game on an Anthony Farrar 24-yard dash for a touchdown at the 3:17 mark of second quarter.
Mykel Dorsey took his first snap of the game on the Buccaneers’ second play of the second half and sliced through the defense for a 72-yard touchdown run (11:23) to tie the game, 14-14.
Farrar scored the final points on a three-yard run as time expired.
“We turned the ball over three times in the second half, and when that happens you’ll never win,” Carmichaels coach John Menhart said.
