Area high school boys soccer season is in full swing
With only six returning lettermen, first-year Waynesburg Central coach Adam Blandino realizes his Raiders are short on experience and, with only six seniors and as many juniors, will be fielding a young team and learning a new system at the same time. But Blandino’s players understand what he expects, which is 100 percent effort in practices and games. “In the early stages of the season, that’s exactly what I’ve seen, the effort and senior leadership,” he said. Waynesburg Central, 5-13 overall, 3-11 in Section 5-AA, last earned a post-season berth three years ago, and four senior captains are looking to end that streak.
As defensive midfielder, Hunter Barnhart moves the ball well and has the ability to control balls in the air. But when the opportunity arises, he attacks the net well. Justin Howells brings athletic ability and strong defensive skills to the same position, defensive midfielder, in addition to being an effective passer.
Another solid defender, Jonathan Remsing, also adds good ball-handling skills to his defensive midfielder position. Jonathan Ritenour brings solid defensive abilities as an outside defenseman.
“We control the ball well and defend well,” Blandino said. “Our game plan will involve playing a defensive ball-control type of game. Our four senior captains form a good nucleus and we will build around them, but we also have some good young players ready to step in and contribute. We have a nice combination of veterans and youth who will enable us to build a complete program.”
