Local roundup:Southmoreland girls tennis team sweeps Jeannette
Southmoreland swept all matches in straight sets for a 5-0 victory over Jeannette in Section 1-AA tennis play Tuesday. Chelsea Pence defeated Julie Boettner, 6-0, 6-0, and Sarah Albright earned the win over Tara Snyder 6-0, 6-0 for Southmoreland (5-2, 4-2). Cassie Eiford won at No. 3 singles over Paige Wallace, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles play, Angie Lusk and Marissa Kohl defeated Carolyn Yennerell and Bria Ellison, 6-2, 6-2, and Chelsie Leonard and Heather Connors topped Geena Barberio and Carrie Giles, 6-1, 6-0.
Boys golf
Waynesburg 203, Brownsville 285 ? Ben Virgin shot a 37 to lead Waynesburg in a Division II, Section 8 win over Brownsville at Rohanna?s Golf Course.
Matt King, Aaron Haywood and Jackson Gardner carded 41s for the Raiders (10-1, 7-0) on the par 33 front nine course. Cody Lippencott rounded out the scoring with a 43.
Nick Calvaresi led Brownsville (0-8, 0-7) with a 37.
Connellsville 236, Southmoreland 239 ? Eric Harrer and Johnnie Leonard carded 42s to lead Connellsville past Southmoreland in Division I, Section 2 play.
Justin Teets shot a 43 as Tyler Stillwagon and Tyler Broadwater added a 54 and 55, respectively, for the Falcons (4-4, 4-4).
Chip Smith led Southmoreland (0-8, 0-8) with a 44 on the par 34 course. Brandon Yuhouse shot a 47 as Daniel Wright and Joe Martin carded 49s. Cory Nicklow shot a 50.
Albert Gallatin 225, Ringgold 228 ? Mike Petrun was medalist with a 38 to give Albert Gallatin a narrow win against section rival Ringgold at Duck Hollow Golf Course.
Brandon Yuhaniak and Caleb Voithofer shot 44s, and Pat McDonough added a 46 for the Colonials (4-6, 2-6). Brandon Sutton shot a 53.
Mike Yavorsky and Colin McCormick led Ringgold (3-5, 3-5, shooting 41s.
Laurel Highlands 204, Albert Gallatin 225 ? Nate Nesser led all golfers with a 38 on the front nine, par 35 course at Duck Hollow to lift Laurel Highlands to a section win over Uniontown.
Alex Ashton was close behind with a 39 as Dave Byers shot 41 for the Mustangs (6-2). Zack Collins added a 42 and Ben Sutton carded a 44.
Ben Sampson led Uniontown (4-7, 3-5) with a 41. Mason Fordyce chipped in with a 45 and Ryan Fike shot a 46. Josh and Zack Nelson shot 48 each.
Belle Vernon 196, Mt. Pleasant 213 ? Tyber and Bo Lustig led the way as Belle Vernon remained undefeated.
Tyber Lustig carded a 1-under 35 and Bo Lustig shot an even par 36 at Willowbrook Golf Course. Kirby Manown followed with a 40 and Kyle Naden carded a 41 for the Leopards (9-0, 8-0). Tim Moore rounded out the scorecard with a 44.
Zac Heide led the Vikings (6-2, 6-2) with a 37. David Cenkner carded a 39 as Trevor McCalment added a 44. Ryan Bull shot a 44 and Cameron Swink carded a 48.
In the junior varsity match, Belle Vernon?s Tim Wilson recorded a double eagle on the par five, second hole by hitting the ball in from 170 yards with a nine iron.
Jefferson-Morgan 217, Washington 315 ? Josh Kokoska led the Rockets with a 38 as Jefferson-Morgan cruised to a Division II, Section 8 win.
Zach Berkstresser carded a 43 and Joe DeFrancesco added a 44 for the Rockets (7-2, 6-1). Alex Rush chipped in with a 45 as Brandon Fiaeta shot a 47.
Sam Interval led Washington (1-6, 1-6) with a 47.
Greensburg C.C. 220, Frazier 228 ? The Commodores fell short as the Division II, Section 2 second half got under way, dropping their first section match of the year.
Frazier slips to 5-1 in the section and 6-2 overall.
Tyler Rock was low for the Commodores with a 5-over 42. D.J. Hudik shot a 44. Nick Hawranko (46), Robert Gondura (47), and Zach Smalich (49) also counted in the final score. Eddie Miller?s 54 wasn?t used.
The Centurions? Jason Chang was medalist with a 4-over 41.
California 191, Beth-Center 255 ? The Trojans remained in the Division II, Section 8 playoff hunt with a victory over the visiting Bulldogs on the back nine of Cedarbrook Golf Course?s Gold course.
California?s Dave Beck led the way with an even-par 36. Dominic Roach and Phillip Langley both shot 37, and Zac Edmiston finished with 39. Tyler Van Olst closed the scoring with a 42. Alex Roach?s 46 wasn?t used.
Austin Smith was the low man for Beth-Center (2-5, 2-8) with a 7-over 43. Tyler Sabatula and Logan Hunt both finished with 51. Alex Antonio shot a 52, and Brock Hartley closed the scoring with a 58.
California (5-2, 6-2) hosts Fort Cherry Thursday at Cedarbrook.
Boys soccer
Trinity Christian 1, Geibel Catholic 0, OT ? Tyler Cole scored with 5:30 left in overtime to give Trinity Christian its first Section 1-A win.
Chris Vurger made 12 saves for Trinity Christian (1-2, 1-2).
?We had our chances, even in overtime,? said Geibel coach Mike Grant. ?We hit a crossbar and a post in the first few minutes of overtime, but they have good goalkeeper.?
Geibel (4-4, 2-1) held a 12-3 advantage in shots on goal.
?Logan Persechetti, Matt Kovalchuk and Dayne Detweiler all played exceptionally well,? added Grant. ?We had good shots, but couldn?t get that one goal.?
South Allegheny 6, Brownsville 2 ? South Allegheny scored six goals in the second half to down Brownsville in Section 1-A play.
Chelsea Ulery scored both goals for Brownsville.
McKeesport 4, Albert Gallatin 0 ? Christian Beech scored all four goals in McKeesport?s win over Section 4-AAA rival Albert Gallatin.
Beech scored two goals three minutes apart in the first half and two more 10 minutes apart in the second half.
Shawn Smearcheck had 13 saves for the Colonials (2-4,1-2).
Mt. Lebanon 9, Laurel Highlands 1 ? Zack Batteer scored four goals and Nate Sharbaugh scored a hat trick as Mt. Lebanon scored seven goals in the first half en route to a Section 4-AAA win over Laurel Highlands.
Mt. Lebanon (5-0-1, 0-2) held a 23-8 advantage in shots on goal.
Justin Glosnar scored the lone goal for Laurel Highlands (3-3, 0-2) at the 17:00 mark of the second half. Laurel Highlands returns to action Thursday for a section game against West Mifflin.
Carlynton 5, Beth-Center 0 ? The Cougars shut out the Bulldogs for a Section 4-A road win. Carlynton improves to 3-0-0 in the section and 4-1-0 overall. Beth-Center is 0-2-0 in the section and 2-2-0 overall.
Girls volleyball
Frazier 3, Mapletown 0 ? Amber Baughman scored 12 service points and Caitlin Fidel added 11 service points and four kills as Frazier picked up a Section 5-A win over Mapletown.
The Lady Commodores (2-0, 2-0) won by scores of 25-10, 25-13 and 25-7. Amanda Papo had six kills and 12 assists.
Jefferson-Morgan 3, California 0 ? Jefferson-Morgan swept California in Section 5-A.
The Rockets won by scores of 25-6, 25-6, and 25-12.
Cannon-McMillan 3, Albert Gallatin 0 ? Cannon-McMillan swept Section 2-AAA rival Albert Gallatin by scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-23.
Deanna D?Frank led the Lady Colonials (2-5, 0-3) with 10 digs, four kills and a pair of blocks. Sarrah Ferrah had eight digs, seven assists, five aces and four kills as Marissa Wallace had five kills and five blocks.
Geibel Catholic 3, West Greene 0 ? Breanne Dowden had 15 assists, 17 service points and seven aces to lead the Lady Gators to a Section 5-A home victory over the Lady Pioneers. Geibel won by the scores, 25-2, 25-10, 25-8.
Annie Caccimelio finished with 16 service points, including five aces. Rachel Erdely had 14 service points with three aces. Carly Ciarochi and Kayla Maruniak finished with eight kills each.
Geibel improves to 3-0.
Beth-Center 3, Washington 0 ? The Lady Bulldogs remained undefeated in Section 7-AA, sweeping the visiting Prexies in three sets, 25-13, 25-10, 27-25. Beth-Center improves to 3-0.
Rachel Pagac led the way for the Lady Bulldogs with 14 service points and eight kills. Breigh Davecka had 16 service points while Crystal Stish finished with 15. Gabby Jones added 11 service points. Lindsey Coffey was strong at the net with 11 kills. Alicia Statzula had 10 assists.
Girls cross country
Laurel Highlands 15, Elizabeth-Forward 50 ? The Fillies had an easy time in the Section 2-AAA home opener, routing the short-handed Lady Warriors.
Elizabeth-Forward?s Braelyn Tracy finished first in 22:31. Laurel Highlands? Ellie Monaghan was closed behind in second at 22:40. Brandi Liptock was third with a time of 23:22. Anna Howard was fourth in 25:22, and Rebecca Felix finished in fifth with the time of 26:41.
Uniontown 15, Albert Gallatin 50; Uniontown 19, Thomas Jefferson 35 ? The Lady Jaguars? Leah Muden finished first in 21:07, but the Lady Raiders took the next four places for the Section 2-AAA sweep at Thomas Jefferson.
Uniontown?s Julie Friend was second with a time of 21:33. Rachel Diamond was third in 23:43, Caycee Guthrie fourth in 23:48, and Victoria Kern one second behind in fifth. Uniontown is 2-0 in the section and 4-0 overall.
Savanna Ardabell was the first girl to finish for Albert Gallatin, placing ninth overall in 26:58.
Ringgold 20, Connellsville 39; West Mifflin 19, Connellsville 44; West Mifflin 26, Ringgold 37 ? The Lady Titans swept the opening Section 2-AAA triangular with the Lady Rams salvaging a split with a win over the Lady Falcons.
Ringgold?s Jackie Barnar finished first in 22:28.
Connellsville?s Kensey Durst was fourth with a time of 25:30.
Brownsville 15, Geibel Catholic 50; Brownsville 15, Frazier 50 ? Neither Frazier nor the home team had enough runners to score, so the Lady Falcons opened the Section 3-AA schedule with a triangular sweep.
Amber Simcoke finished first with a time of 22:31. Charhea Strickler was second in 22:59, and Kelsey Johnson was third in 24:18.
Frazier?s Amber Starr was eighth in 28:50.
Boys cross country
Laurel Highlands 15, Elizabeth-Forward 49 ? The Mustangs took the first six places on their home course, led to the finish by Anthony Cecchini in 19:05.
Michael Cecchini was second in 19:18, Ryan Teets finished third in 19:23, and Justin Kostelnik was fourth in 19:27. Ian Sunyecz finished fifth with time of 19:39, with brother Alec was close behind in 19:43.
Uniontown 23, Thomas Jefferson 32; Uniontown 18, Albert Gallatin 43; Thomas Jefferson 21, Albert Gallatin 34 ? The Red Raiders? Tommy Kegg and Nathan Wagner went 1-2 to lead Uniontown to a Section 2-AAA sweep at Thomas Jefferson.
Uniontown is 2-0 in the section and 4-0 overall.
Kegg finished in 17:23 with Wagner second in 17:42. Torin Kelley was sixth with a time of 18:24. Josh Nypaver (8th, 19:10), Lukas Edenfield (9th, 19:10), and Bryce Markwardt (10th, 19:22) also had top 10 finishes.
Calvin Fenton led the Colonials to the finish line in fourth place with a time of 18:12.
Connellsville 27, Ringgold 32; Connellsville 26, West Mifflin 29; West Mifflin 25, Ringgold 34 ? Ringgold had two of the top three finishers, but the Falcons had a strong grouping in the middle of the pack for a sweep a Section 2-AAA triangular at Mingo Park.
West Mifflin?s Surmich won the race in 18:10, followed by Ringgold?s John Sendek (18:18) and Brian Johnson (18:20).
Connellsville?s Adam Siecinski was fourth in 18:26. Nick Cicio finished fifth in 19:05 with teammate Seth Soberdash not too far behind in 19:40. John Dillinger (10th, 20:06) and Nathan Tressler (11th, 20:18) closed out the scoring.
Connellsville (2-0, 4-0) is on the road next Tuesday for a key meet against Laurel Highlands.
Brownsville 24, Frazier 33; Brownsville 17, Geibel Catholic 42; Frazier 22, Geibel Catholic 34 ? Cameron Coffey cruised around the Gators? 2.75-mile course in 15:45, easily outdistancing the field to lead the Falcons to a Section 3-AA sweep in the opening triangular.
The Falcons? Jonathan Rohlf was third in 17:06. Corey Peton was fifth in 17:37, and Chazz Farrier was eighth in 18:39.
The Commodores were led home by Sawyer Palonder in second place with a time of 16:50. Brandon Mathews was fourth in 17:16, and Garrett Baber placed seventh with a time of 18:01.
The Gators? Anthony Speeney was sixth with a time of 17:40.
