Southmoreland girls in 8-0 soccer win over AG

2 min read

YORK RUN ? Southmoreland girls soccer coach Brian Shrum is making sure to keep his team grounded in the tight Section 6-AAA race. On Wednesday, the Lady Scotties came off an exhausting double overtime tie with Belle Vernon by winning 8-0 over Albert Gallatin.

?We talk about taking one game at a time,? Shrum said. ?I think in the last three or four years, we?ve had kids who understand how to do that; to do what needs to be done every game and put the ball in the net.?

Against the Lady Colonials, Southmoreland (2-0-1, 2-1-1) scored six goals in a nine-minute span of the first half to take control of the game.

Andrea Wisniewski started scoring 3:25 into the contest, about two minutes after AG goaltender Jessica Jones had stopped her in front of the net.

Jones stood tall in the first several minutes by making four saves, including quality chances by Hayley Skovira, Alecia Byers, and Jessica Skovira. AG senior defender Ashley Cottrell also had consecutive blocks on chances by Wisniewski 14 minutes into the half.

But at the 17:17 mark, the Lady Scotties went on a tear as Aryn Askin took a free kick from Holly Shipley and fed Byers for the team?s second goal.

Wisniewski followed with goals at 17:50 and 19:35 for the hat trick, Askin scored at 23:34 and 25:39, and Jessica Skovira scored at 26:02 for a 7-0 halftime lead.

Hayley Skovira scored the final goal at 5:37 of the second half to end scoring.

While Albert Gallatin (0-2, 0-4) had no direct shots on goaltender Sarah Richter in the first half, the Lady Colonials had several good chances on goalkeeper Shelby Hawkins in the final 40 minutes. Senior Kathy Gates had two good shots, one that Hawkins saved, and another that went just wide of the net.

First year coach Rick Hansen has been getting to know his Lady Colonials the past two months and his squad has been hampered by numerous injuries.

Jones made 15 saves, and Hansen said, ?She?s one of our more experienced players with a lot of heart. Our girls are dedicated, play hard and never give up.? He said Cottrell has been strong on defense all season.

?Southmoreland has good individual skills, great teamwork, and a great coach,? Hansen said.

Shrum said that no matter what the score is in a given game, ?We want to try to keep thinking about making plays.?
