AG loses to Greensburg Salem
YORK RUN – There was a snowball at Albert Gallatin High School on Friday night. No, it wasn’t some weird weather anomaly. It was the Greensburg Salem football team and its momentum that snowballed to a 28-6 victory over the host Colonials.
The Golden Lions (2-1, 1-0) held just a 14-0 halftime lead on the Colonials (1-2, 0-1) but it was the momentum that GS built in the first half that finished off AG in the second half.
“We just couldn’t get off the field on defense in the first half,” AG coach Bill Elias said. “Our kids did the best they could, but we just couldn’t get the ball back and they just wore us down.
“Our kids were just worn down,” Elias said. “I do have to give them credit. They could have quit, but they didn’t and they did some good things, especially in the second half.”
The Golden Lions took a 6-0 lead on a 9-yard pass from quarterback Nathaniel Sphon to tight end Vincent Mongelluzzo.
“That was about as good of a start as we could have asked for,” GS head coach Casey Cavanaugh said about the opening drive which took nearly four minutes off the clock.
The Golden Lions used their steady ground attack the entire first half as they ran for 210 first-half yards with 142 of those coming from tailback Matt Adams.
“Albert Gallatin is a good football team,” Cavanaugh said. “We weren’t very happy that we couldn’t put the ball in the end zone more in the first half but a lot of credit goes to them. Albert Gallatin played a physical game and we weren’t as physical as we should have been.”
“It seemed like every time we got something going we would take one step forward and then two steps back,” Elias said. “We had a touchdown called back, made some penalties at wrong times and just didn’t catch any breaks.”
The Colonials finally got on the scoreboard with 5:59 left in the game when junior tailback Grayling Sanders scored from 1 yard out.
AG finished with 110 yards of total offense. Quarterback Cody Peebles threw for 63 yards to lead the way, while Sanders had 38 rushing yards on 10 carries.
The Colonials return to action on Friday when they travel to Uniontown for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
“I just hope we are healthy for that game,” Elias said. “We have got a lot of kids beat up right now. My kids are giving it everything they have but its tough to win when you are beat up like we are.”
