Penn State Fayette women complete weekend sweep
By the Herald-Standard The nationally-ranked Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus women?s volleyball team completed its sweep of a two-day road trip Saturday with a pair of 3-0 victories over Penn State-Mont Alto and Penn State-York.
The Roaring Lions swept past Mont Alto, 25-21, 25-16, 25-17, and York, 25-17, 25-7, 25-17.
Leah Ambrosini led the way with 14 kills. Sami Anderson had a strong defensive effort with 12 digs, and Katie Sleasman dished out 14 assists. Alex Rossi added seven kills and Jen Trump finished with seven blocks.
Ambrosini had seven kills and seven aces against York. Meghan Leary finished with eight digs, and Sleasman had 19 assists. Rossi was strong at the net with nine kills, and Jade Turner had four blocks.
The Roaring Lions started the weekend Friday night with 3-0 victories over both Penn State-Scranton (25-9, 25-5, 25-14) and Penn College (25-18, 25-16, 25-15).
Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, ranked ninth heading into the weekened, improves to 6-0 in the PSUAC and 7-2 in the USCAA.

Geibel Catholic 3, Connellsville 2, OT ? Rebecca Sandor finished with a hat trick, including the game-winning goal in the first overtime, as the Lady Gators slipped past the visiting Lady Falcons for a non-section victory.
Women?s tennis
California (Pa.) 9, Kutztown 0; California (Pa.) 9, Millersville 0 ? The Vulcans opened the 2009 fall season Saturday afternoon with a pair of road victories against a couple of PSAC-East Conference opponents.
California lost just four games in sweeping the three doubles matches against Kutztown. Axelle Fernandez and Alina Stanila lost only one game at No. 1 doubles. Galina Vishnikina and Anastassiya Zherdevea won an 8-3 decision at No. 2 doubles, and Nina Kowalski and Laurie Navarro didn?t drop a game at No. 3 doubles.
Fernandez lost the first set at No. 2 singles, but rallied for the victory. Stanila, Kowalski, Navarro, Zherdeva and Vishnikina all won in straight sets.
Things went pretty much the same way in the victory over Millersville with all six singles matches finishing 6-0, 6-0.
California hosts Ashland (Ohio) in a non-conference match Tuesday.
Boys golf
Laurel Highlands 199, Belle Vernon 208 ? The Mustangs snapped Belle Vernon?s 35-match winning streak with a Division I, Section 2 victory Friday afternoon at Duck Hollow Golf Club.
The Mustangs? Nate Nesser fired a 37 to share medalist honors with the Leopards? Bo Lustig. Laurel Highlands? Dave Byers and Ben Sutton carded sub-40 scores of 39.
Bo?s brother Tyber shot a 41 with Brad Antal (43), Tim Moore (43) and Kyle Naden (44) rounding out the scoring for Belle Vernon (8-1).
Zach Collins and Alex Ashton fired 42s for the Mustangs (7-2, 8-2). Laurel Highlands golf in the sectional qualifier Monday at Pleasant Valley Country Club and then faces section foe Albert Gallatin Tuesday at Duck Hollow.
Frazier 227, Geibel Catholic 254 ? The Commodores picked up a Division II, Section 2 win over the Gators Thursday at Linden Hall Golf Course.
Tyler Rock grabbed medalist honors with a 41 for the Commodores on the Par 36 course. Teammates Nick Hawranko (44) and Robert Gondura (46) finished second and third respectively.
The Gators? Shawn Erdely shot a 45 while Mike Noonan and Ryan Robson cared a 48 and 52 respectively. D.J. Hudik (47) and Wyatt Tidholm (49) rounded out the scoring for the Commodores (4-3, 4-6) while Ryan Lucostic (54) and Mike Spegar closed it out for the Gators (1-5, 1-5).
Women?s soccer
California (Pa.) 2, Clarion 0 ? The Vulcans moved into first place all by themselves with a PSAC-West Conference home victory Saturday over the Golden Eagles.
California (5-1, 6-1) leads the West division with 15 points. Clarion falls to 0-6 in the conference and 3-6 overall.
The Vulcans? Carley Work scored her fifth goal of the season in the 58th minute to break a scoreless tie. Amanda Heister and Carina Honeygosky assisted on the goal. Heister scored three minutes later from Honeygosky?s team-leading seventh assist.
Keeper Paula Jackson recorded her second-straight shutout, needing only one save to do so. Clarion?s keeper Jenna Kulik kept the Golden Eagles in the match with 13 saves.
California returns to action on Tuesday when the Vulcans travel to Indiana (Pa.) for a 4 p.m. conference match.
Washington & Jefferson 5, Muskingum 0 ? Laurel Highlands graduate Molly Macioce scored her second goal of the season, helping the Presidents win their third-straight game in a row.
Macioce?s goal spotted Washington & Jefferson to a 1-0 lead.
Scholastic football
Clairton 62, Frazier 7 ?Frazier scored the first touchdown, but Clairton reeled off 62-unanswered points to defeat the Commodores in Black Hills Conference action Friday.
Chase Kirmeyer plunged in from one-yard out and Kyle Rodriqeuz’s PAT gave Frazier the early lead. Clairton’s Desimon Green threw for three touchdowns and ran 56 yards for another.
Jimmy Kline was 3 of 9 for 50 yards and ran for 50 yards on 13 attempts. Frazier falls to 1-2.
