California grabs 7-2 win over Brownsville

4 min read

CALIFORNIA – The California Trojans tallied the first four goals and went on to a 7-2 Section 1-A win over the Brownsville Falcons on a windy and cold Tuesday evening. “We are making the same mistakes,” Brownsville coach Kelli Sampson said. “We are not moving to the ball, and we are getting too anxious and nervous while playing the ball. We are not trying to pass the ball to each other; we are focused on clearing it instead. We been practicing not to do that, but we just seem to panic when we have the ball.”

With the win, California (5-6-1, 3-4-1) swept the season-series with Brownsville (0-11, 0-8) with an earlier 1-0 victory on the road.

“The first couple of minutes of the game they were missing some of their starters, so that has to be a factor,” California coach Adam Obranovich said. “Last time we played them it was our first game of the season, and we were just getting organized. This time, we played with a lot of improvement, and we are building chemistry.”

“Whenever we play Brownsville, the players seemed to get amped up. We separated from them a couple of years ago to be our own team in this section, and we were just fired up to face them today.”

The scoring started seven minutes in when freshmen Jacob Angelo took a pass from sophomore Nazareth Victoria and garnered the contest’s first goal.

Seven minutes later, the Trojans added to their lead via another goal by Angelo. Senior Brian Davis assisted on the marker.

Sophomore Patrick Tunney doubled the Trojans’ lead to 4-0 with the next two goals.

The Falcons trimmed the deficit to 4-1 when senior Matt Whyel banked a shot into the back of the net.

Brownsville would not have the momentum for very long as California answered 30 seconds later with a goal from senior Andrew Anderson.

The Falcons went into half trailing 5-2 as freshmen Brandon Bailey scored a goal off of a penalty kick with two minutes left in the half.

“The first half didn’t start too well, and we had some of our players at a cross-country event, so that really hurt us,” Sampson said. “We were missing about six kids at the beginning of the game, and they came at halftime. We got some shots off, but we’re still making those same mistakes that cost us games.”

Sophomore Skyler Boehm recorded the first goal of the second half at 38:00.

Angelo added a helper on Boehm’s tally and ended his day with a third goal at 33:00 to seal the Trojans’ victory.

“He (Angelo) had a great game for us today,” Obranovich said. “He is only a freshmen, and he definitely has some more learning to do, but he is moving forward and we are excited to have him for a couple more years.”

Sophomore William Little got the win in net for California as he was credited with five saves on the day.

For Brownsville sophomore John DiDominic who is the back-up goalie suffered the loss and totaled 13 stops.

“It’s a tough transition for John in net,” Sampson said. “It’s a whole different mentality than he is used to when he is playing on the field. Our starter got injured, and he was next on the depth chart. He got to realize that since we are losing all these games that it’s not his fault. He is trying his best out there, you win as a team and you lose as a team.”

Both teams will be in section action on Thursday as California hosts Winchester Thurston and Brownsville travels to Geibel Catholic.
