Wydo, Yurick, Crum share senior lead
Bernie Wydo was an unhappy golfer when he left Springdale Golf Course Friday afternoon.
Wydo felt a little better after Saturday’s third round of the Fayette County Open, carding a 4-over 75 to share the senior division lead with Rick Yurick and Gene Crum.
“It came back,” Wydo said. “I was hitting good shots and my putting was better.”
The leaderboard for the two-round senior tournament is crowded heading into today’s final round at Duck Hollow Golf Club.
Joe Ruby and George Knapp are a stroke back at 76, while Dave Smithburger and Hank Dunham trail by two strokes.
GOING LOW: Jeremy Enslen had the low round of the day with a 3-under 68. Three other golfers broke par with Santino Marchitello and Seth Rockwell carding 2-under 69, and Fred David shooting 1-under 70.
Rockwell had four birdies and four bogeys for his lowest round of the tournament, moving up onto the first page of the leaderboard with a 7-over 219.
“The greens were soft. I was trying to go at the flag,” said Rockwell. “I was making a lot of putts.
“I think I know Duck Hollow very well. I’ll just go out there and play my best,” adding, “I wish I wouldn’t have taken that eight (Friday at Springdale).”
David was obviously pleased with his round.
“I missed a lot of easy birdies, but I’m happy with the way I hit the ball,” said David.
BAND OF BROTHERS: The Rockwells and Davids flipped spots after Saturday’s third round.
Fred David is the low man of the three sets of brothers with a 217. Seth Rockwell’s subpar round gave him a three-day total of 219. Justin Goletz stands third with a 221.
Zach Rockwell slid back a little, standing at 224. Scott Goletz has a three-round total of 235, and Rich David rounds out the sibling scores with a 258.
ON THE BAG: Ron Jones will be on the other side Monday when he is on the back for fellow Brownsville graduate Ryan Bashour. Bashour, along with Waynesburg’s Robert Rohanna, is competing in the Pennsylvania Open.
CHAMPIONS ON PARADE: The 10:15 a.m. pairing features two past champions (John Kingora, Pat Calvaresi), while the 9:48 pairing has a trio of champions (John Lenkey, Mike Revak, Wydo).
GETTING STARTED: The first senior threesome starts the final day of the four-day tournament at 8 a.m. at Duck Hollow Golf Club. Dave Jamison, Marchitello and Enslen are the final group with a scheduled 10:33 a.m. tee time.
