Field finalized for 60th PONY League World Series

WASHINGTON, PA — The 10-team field is set for the 60th PONY League World Series, starting Friday evening at Lew Hays PONY Field in Washington.

The home of PONY Baseball, the city of Washington plays host to the World Series for the 49th time overall, the 28th consecutive year since the Series returned on a permanent basis.

Action in the two-division, double-elimination tournament begins with a doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. Friday when Long Beach, Calif., takes on Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

It is the first-ever berth for the Dominicans. Long Beach is in the field for the third time in five years, having won the 2008 championship.

Opening Ceremonies, and another first-round game between Culiacan, Mexico, and Youngstown, Ohio, conclude Friday’s schedule.

Saturday begins with the Champions League game at 10 a.m. This newest PONY Baseball/Softball division provides opportunities to play baseball for children with special needs.

The World Series Home Run Derby and Skills Competition follows immediately after.

Bracket play continues Saturday afternoon when Lafayette, Ind., faces Laredo, Texas, at 2:30 p.m., followed by the host team against Cranberry, Pa., winners of the host Area South berth. The tripleheader wraps up with Asia-Pacific champion Chinese Taipei against the Long Beach/Santo Domingo winner.

Sunday’s schedule includes the World Series Breakfast of Champions at the Doubletree-Meadowlands, followed by a Champions League game at noon. Tripleheader play includes New Bedford, Mass., playing against the Lafayette/Laredo winner, and two elimination games.

Doubleheader action is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 15 through Division Championship Night Thursday, Aug. 18. Game times are 5:30 and 8 p.m.

If Necessary games will be played Friday, Aug. 19 with the World Series Championship Game scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 20 at 1 p.m.

Daily admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children 14 & under. Series passes will also be available at the gates. Concession and souvenir stands are also available.
