Henry sweeps Twin 35’s at Motordrome
SMITHTON — For the second time in 2011, former Track Champion Bobby Henry, of Connellsville, won both of the “Twin 35-lap features” for NASCAR Subway Late Models at Motordrome Speedway last Friday night.
Other winners were Denny Keller (Chargers) and Matt Sever (Coca Cola Super Compacts); Steve Joss won the companion Enduro 100.
After Dan Lewis and John Komarinski swapped the lead at the start of the first NASCAR Subway Late Model feature, disaster struck.
Barry Awtey, the points leader and five time winner, spun in turn three, collecting three-time winner Garry Wiltrout, and several other cars. Although eight cars were heavily damaged, all drivers walked away from the lap four crash. Fifth place starter Henry took the lead from Lewis on lap 16, and was never challenged for the victory.
Earlier this year, Henry swept a program of Twin 35’s, and all five of his wins in 2011 have been 35 laps in distance. Henry and Komarinski won the heats.
After rookie Joe Balough led the first laps of his career, a thrilling finish with a three car battle to the checkered was won by Denny Keller in the 15-lap Charger feature.
Former Champion Sever returned to his racing roots for the first time in two years. The winning Street Stock driver earned another win using his Coca Cola Super Compact car, taking the lead from Kyle Komarinski and holding off most recent winner Paul Koffler, Jr., who finished second. Koffler, III placed third with Brandon Bittner fourth and Andrew Dutkewycz fifth. Scott Ahlborn, Brian Noel, and Sever won the heat races.
In the Enduro 100, former Modified racer Rich Nicola led early, before most recent winner Joss of West Mifflin, inherited the lead when Nicola dropped out.
Friday the TBRA Late Models return with stars of the Midwest locking horns with the Motordrome NASCAR Subway Late Model drivers in The Subway 75 Part II, at regular admission prices.
