Zeigler scores career first late model win at Roaring Knob
MARKLEYSBURG — Mason Zeigler won his career-first American Racer Tire Super Late Model feature by passing Scott Rhodes at Roaring Knob Saturday night.
Rick Strickler took his first checker of the season by winning the Krause Electric FASTRAK Late Models, while Dave Friend, Jr. won his first in the FWD 4 Cylinders.
Vic Vandergrift earned his second AMRA Modified feature with Jim Bendishaw, Jr. taking his fourth in the TC Race Car Parts Street Stocks and Kenny Burkholder taking win number five in the Ft. Necessity Garage Chargers.
The 4 Cylinder Trucks made their first visit and Jeremiah Johnson took the feature win.
Strickler has been fast all year and he finally pulled it all together. The Morgantown driver led all 20-laps enroute to his first Knob feature win of 2011.
Bendishaw was on a mission in the 15-lap TC Race Car Parts Street Stocks feature. When the green dropped so did Todd Dennis followed suit from his seventh starting spot. The pair raced side-by-side for most of the race before Bendishaw crossed under the checker for his fourth win of the season.
Scott Rhodes appeared like his was going for his third win after starting on the pole in the 25-lap American Racer Tire Super Late Model feature. Rhodes quickly took the lead at the drop of the green from his pole starting spot. Rhodes led the first 22 laps, as Mason Zeigler stalked him in second. Zeigler went for a slide job on lap 20 but slid high in turn two and Rhodes went flying past him. Zeigler then made a second attempt on lap 23 and this time it worked.
The Chalk Hill driver then pulled away the final few laps to win his career first Super Late Model feature.
Bradley Nesline led the start of the 12-lap Ft. Necessity Garage Charger main event. He kept Kenny Burkholder at bay until Bukholder made the winning pass on lap six.
Fairmont’s Vic Vandergrift returned after a week off and lead all 15-laps of the AMRA Modified feature.
Connellsville’s Dave Friend, Jr. parked in victory lane for the first time since 2004 in the FWD 4 Cylinder Roadrunners at the Knob. Friend held off the advances of four-time winner Steve Settle in the 10-lap event.
The 4-Cylinder Trucks made their first-ever appearance at Roaring Knob for a 10-lap feature. When the checker fell it was Jeremiah Johnson of Normalville taking the feature win.
Saturday the Ft. Necessity Chargers take center stage with a 25-lap feature event paying a double purse.
The American Racer Tire Super Late Models, Krause Electric FASTRAK Late Models, TC Race Car Parts Street Stocks and FWD 4-Cylinder Roadrunners will also be in competition. The AMRA Modifieds have the night off but will be back on Sept. 3.
