Awtey becomes six-time winner at Motordrome

3 min read

SMITHTON — Veteran Barry Awtey, of Jenners, earned his sixth win of the year by defeating a star-studded field of the NASCAR Subway Late Models and T.B.R.A. Late Models in the “Subway 75” last Friday at Motordrome.

Other winners in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series on Romesburg Media Group Night included Chris Brink (Modifieds), Shawn Phillips (Street Stocks), Anthony Aiello (Chargers), and Scott Ahlborn (Coca Cola Super Compacts).

When the green flag waved at the start of the Subway 75, former Subway Late Model winner Gregory Kelley was on the pole. Veteran Mark Poole grabbed the lead and maintained the spot for 30 laps. Tyler Strickland held the second position for 16 laps, before fifth place starter Awtey became the runner-up. On lap 31.

Awtey made the winning move, stealing the point position from Poole. On lap 54, Stickland and Garry Wiltrout tangled while batting for fourth; both drivers walked away, handing a top five position to both Bobby Henry (five time winner), and T.B.R.A. points leader Ali Kern. Henry, the previous week’s winner, had the chance to restart right alongside his 2011 Championship rival Awtey, but never seriously challenged for the win.

Defending Modified Champion Chris Brink won more races than any other driver in 2010, but had not seen a checkered flag this season. Taking the lead from his front row starting spot, Brink found victory lane after leading all 25 laps. Chasing him to the finish line were former Charger Champ and recent winner Bobby Shipp in second; sixth place starter Gary Scott, points leader Bryan Shipp, and recent winner Billy Hribar in the top five.
