Experience, quickness carry Frazier past Mikes, 66-34
PERRYOPOLIS — The Frazier Commodores used their experience and quickness to run past Carmichaels, 66-34, in the season opener for both teams.
Frazier (1-0) had three players finish in double figures. Rock Vargo scored a game high 23-points, including three 3-pointers. Charlie Manack added 12 and Robert Gondura tossed in 10 for Frazier.
The Mighty Mikes (0-1) had no player reach double figures. Brandon Lawless did manage to score nine points to lead the Mikes.
“The kids had that deer in the headlights look for a while. But they’ll learn from this,” Carmichaels’ Don Williams said. “I’ve got a lot of young kids and they ran into that press and things got away from them. They just need a little bit of work.”
Frazier raced out to a quick 12-0 lead, forcing Williams to call a second timeout in the early moments of the game. Frazier scored another basket before the Mikes settled down and ran off nine straight points.
Frazier regrouped behind its press and the scoring of Gondura and Rock, going on a 14-2 run to take a 28-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. In that first quarter Rock scored 14 points, including three treys, and Gondura scored eight.
“We feel we’re deep enough to play man defense and we’re going to try to stick to that this year,” Frazier’s Ed Keebler said. “I think I can go eight or nine deep without losing much. We were able to do that today. We’ve been practicing a lot. It was good to finally get a game in.”
The Commodores continued their run in the second quarter getting seven more points from Rock and six from Rock Vargo, outscoring the Mikes 19-5 to take a 47-16 lead at the half.
Frazier continued to pull away from the Mikes in the third quarter with a 12-1 run before turning the game over to the reserves in the fourth quarter.
