Mustangs have record-breaking night at McKeesport
Justin Kostelnik had two record-breaking swims on relays and another in the 100 butterfly Tuesday night, leading Laurel Highlands to an 86-35 non-section victory at McKeesport.
Kostelnik opened his strong night by winning the 100 butterfly in 53 seconds. He came back two events later in the 200 freestyle relay, swimming a 22.37 second first leg and Lucas Thomas, Lee Knoyer and Seth Abraham finished what he started with a WPIAL qualifying time of 1:34.55.
Kostelnik hit the pool right away, winning the 100 backstroke in 1:03.25. After Abraham won the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.95, Kostelnik capped his night by swimming the opening leg of the 400 freestyle relay in a school-record 49.11 seconds.
Thomas, Knoyer and Abraham built off the swim to win the event in 3:42.45.
Thomas (200 freestyle, 1:56.79), Knoyer (200 IM, 2:25.01; 500 freestyle, 5:44.83), Abraham (50 freestyle, 23.02; 100 breaststroke, 1:08.95), and Conor Hughes (100 freestyle, 59.21) all won individual events. Abraham had already qualified in the 50 freestyle, but he bettered his time.
Josh Chisler, Hughes, Daniel Keith and Jacob Hughes started the sweep by winning the 200 medley relay in 2:11.18.
Laurel Highlands improves to 2-0 overall.
Girls swimming
Laurel Highlands 87, McKeesport 82 – The Lady Tigers’ Lena Kline won the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke, but the visiting Fillies finished first in every other event for a non-section road victory.
Emily Yarish (200 freestyle, 2:08.44; 100 breaststroke, 1:16.28), Abbey Siebart (200 IM, 2:48.22; 500 freestyle, 6:03.97), Elizabeth Reilly (50 freestyle, 27.93), and Brooke Mansberry (100 freestyle, 1:02.16) all won individual events for Laurel Highlands.
Mackenzie Robatin, Yarish and Chloe Farris won the 200 medley relay in 2:08.52. Yarish, Mansberry, Farris and Reilly combined to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:53.77, and Mansberry, Siebart, Reilly and Robatin finished first in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:12.93.
Laurel Highlands is now 1-1 overall.
Girls basketball
Jefferson-Morgan 33, Geibel Catholic 32 – The Lady Rockets held a slim 12-9 advantage at halftime, and made the lead stand in second half for a non-section home victory over the Lady Gators.
Christina Schamp led Jefferson-Morgan with a game-high 16 points. Peyton McIntyre was the top scorer for Geibel (0-5) with 13 points.
Laurel Highlands 67, Belle Vernon 56 – The Lady Leopards made a run in the middle quarters, but the Fillies finished strong for a non-section home victory.
Laurel Highlands led 19-5 after the first quarter, but Belle Vernon outscored its hosts over the next 16 minutes, 35-28.
Marissa Erminio finished with another double-double for Laurel Highlands (7-0), scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Haley Moreland finished with 17 points, and Brandi Liptock had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Haley Bashada led Belle Vernon (3-2) with a game-high 25 points. Taylor Zuchowski added 12.
Ringgold 42, Albert Gallatin 35 – The Lady Colonials played better in the second half, outscoring the visiting Lady Rams in the final 16 minutes, 21-10, but fell short in Section 1-AAAA action.
Eleni Radic led Ringgold with a game-high 14 points. Courtney Haines was the top scorer for Albert Gallatin (0-2, 1-5) wtih 13 points.
Boys basketball
Southmoreland 50, Derry 31 – The Scotties pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Trojans, 14-2, on their way to a Section 3-AAA victory. Leading 21-16 at halftime, Southmoreland headed into the final quarter with a 35-18 lead.
Mark McCracken and MIke Luft shared scoring honors for Southmoreland (1-1, 4-1) with 11 points apiece.
Connellsville 58, Latrobe 34 – The Falcons remained unbeaten with a Section 1-AAAA road victory over the Wildcats.
Connellsville held a 20-8 advantage after the first quarter, and led 31-14 at the half. The Falcons extended their lead after the third quarter to 45-24.
Paul Martin led the Falcons (2-0, 5-0) with a game-high 18 points. Nick Pittsment added 10.
Chad Kissell was the top scorer for Latrobe (1-1, 2-3) with nine points.
Geibel Catholic 69, Jefferson-Morgan 66, OT – The Gators needed extra time, but it was worth the effort for a non-section road victory.
The Gators rallied from 12 points down to tie the game in regulation with a 23-11 fourth quarter. They outscored the Rockets in overtime, 7-4.
Tyler Schweiss scored a game-high 24 points for the Gators (4-2). Aaron Agostini finished with 16, Trey Holmes had 11, and Patrick Herbert added 10.
Micah Stanko led the Rockets (0-4) with 15 points. Brandon Faieta added 13 and Dominique Cage finished with 12.
Penn Trafford 68, Albert Gallatin 38 – Three players scored in double figures as Penn Trafford a Section 1-AAAA loss.
Penn Trafford shut out Albert Gallatin in the first quarter 31-0 and maintained that cushion most of the game.
Dorian Stevens led the Warriors (3-2, 0-2) with 13 points as Corey Stanford added 11 and Andy Abreu chipped in 10.
Fred Houston paced the Colonials (0-5, 0-2) with 20 points.
The Colonials are idle until the FCCA Christmas Tournament.
Frazier 73, Charleroi 52 – Robert Gondura and Tyler Rock combined for 59 of Frazier’s points in a Section 4-AA win.
Gondura registered a double-double by scoring 34 points and grabbing 20 rebounds. Rock added 25 points for the Commodores (1-1, 3-2).
Tony Bristol led the Cougars (1-1, 2-3) with 17 points as Eric Johnson scored 10.
Frazier hosts Jefferson-Morgan tonight.
