Manack named All-State for second time

Frazier won the 2010 WPIAL Class A volleyball championship and Megan Manack was a key component on that team, earning all-state honors. She became just the fifth player in school history to receive such recognition.

Manack repeated the feat in 2011, receiving Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association All-State honors once again despite the team not equalling its accomplishments of a year ago.

“Megan established herself as a top player a season ago,” said Frazier dead coach Mandy Hartman. “She was a vital part of that team and stepped up for the 2011 season on a team filled with underclassmen.”

It was a team that had five seniors, but only two, Manack and Kenzie Barch, had varsity experience.

“She showed patience with two freshmen setters out there, especially early in the season,” added Hartman. “I’m not surprised she was selected again this season, based on her performance. She deserved it.”

This second selection might be more impressive than the first, considering the circumstances.

“There weren’t any secrets about who the setters were passing to and Megan took 80 percent of those passes from the setters,” said Hartman. “We could count on her to get points when we needed them the most.”

Fortunately for Manack, the people in charge of the selection process took notice as well.

“I wasn’t surprised last year when I got it, considering we won the WPIAL title,” said Manack. “I wanted to get it again this year, but when we didn’t do as well in the playoffs, I didn’t expect to get the honor. At first, I was under the impression that the team had to do well for me to be recognized. So this year was definitely more surprising to be named all-state.”

But it takes more than skill to be a leader on the team.

“It was a little frustrating early in the season with the younger players, but they learned very quickly,” added Manack. “Coach Hartman turned to Kenzie and me in crunch time since we had been in those situations before. So with all the hard work put in during the offseason, I believe I belong on the All-State team.”

As for now, Manack will concentrate on basketball and offers from colleges to continue her volleyball career.

“The volleyball helps on the basketball court with conditioning and rebounding,” said Manack. “As for colleges, they have been in contact with me and I’ve talked to coaches and visited some of the facilities.”
