The Laurel Highlands girls basketball team fought through a difficult game Monday evening as they fell 82-41 to visiting Indiana in a Section 3-AAA matchup.

“We knew that they were going to come out and be tough and aggressive,” said Laurel Highlands head coach Amy Tungate. “They are one of the best teams we play all year.”

Leslie Stapleton scored seven of her game-high 22 points as the Little Indians (16-1, 8-0) jumped out to a 20-9 lead after the first quarter of play.

In the second quarter the Fillies (11-8, 5-5) began to find cracks in the Indiana defense. Junior Brandi Liptock and freshman Haley Moreland each scored six in the quarter, with difficult finishes over the tall and athletic post players from Indiana.

The Fillies scored 20 points in the second quarter, but despite the impressive efforts from their underclassmen, Laurel Highlands found themselves trailing 43-29 at the half.

Liptock and Moreland scored 12 points apiece to lead Laurel Highlands in scoring.

“I thought we did a good job of fighting hard in the first half,” said Tungate. “We played with them at times and now we just need to learn how to play that way for four quarters.”

The Little Indians, who looked anything but little against LH, continued to dominate the game in the second half as Kristin Brice added 10 of her 21 points to help Indiana cruise to the easy win.

Indiana, coming off their first loss of the season on Friday when they were narrowly defeated 60-57 by Mercyhurt Prep, allowed only 12 points to the fillies in the second half including a single field goal in the fourth quarter.

The Fillies section record dropped to 5-5, while Indiana continues to sit atop Section 3-AAA with its spotless section record intact at 8-0.

“We sometimes have trouble when we come to this gym so it was good to see us come out and play a good game the whole way through,” said Indiana coach Dave Woodall. “We wanted to dominate defensively and we were able to do that, especially in the second half.”

“We got a lift from Stapleton and Brice, but all our girls played well tonight,” Woodall added.

The Fillies return to action on Thursday when they travel to Mount Pleasant for another Section 3-AAA contest.
