Geibel girls post road win at Clairton

The Lady Gators led by seven points after the first quarter Wednesday, and extended their advantage to 16 points at halftime as Geibel Catholic defeated Clairton, 36-26, for a Section 4-A road victory.

The Lady Bears (4-7, 6-12) made a run in the fourth quarter, outscoring Geibel, 12-6, in the final eight minutes.

Hannah Lazuka scored a game-high 10 points for Geibel and Brittany Rulli pulled down eight rebounds. Kamara Townes led Clairton with seven points.

Geibel (7-4, 9-11) closes section action tonight when it hosts Monessen at 7 p.m. The Lady Gators close the regular season Saturday with a non-section home game against Greensburg C.C.

Laurel Highlands 48, Connellsville 32 – The Fillies held the advantage in each of the four quarters for a non-section road victory. Laurel Highlands led 8-5, 22-15 and 37-25 at the quarter breaks.

Caitlin Wontroba led Laurel Highlands (12-9) with 14 points. Marissa Erminio added 10.

Jessica Brooks was the lone player in double figures for the Lady Falcons (4-16) with 11 points.

Boys basketball

Albert Gallatin 63, Belle Vernon 45 – The Colonials started slow, but finished strong for a non-section road win over the Leopards. Trailing 8-7 after the first quarter, Albert Gallatin pushed ahead in the second quarter for a 24-19 halftime lead. The Colonials carried the momentum into the second half, outscoring the home team, 39-26, in the final 16 minutes.

The McKoys were a handful for the Belle Vernon defense with Deon pouring in a game-high 34 points and D’iare adding 11.

Jake Kallam led Belle Vernon (1-17) with 10 points.

Albert Gallatin (7-14) closes section action Friday on the road at Laurel Highlands.

Brownsville 59, Frazier 51 – The battle for a Section 4-AA playoff berth was on the line when the Falcons traveled to Perryopolis, and the visitors came away with the upperhand after defeating the Commodores.

Brownsville led 13-11 after the first quarter and 22-17 at the half, but Frazier made a run in the third quarter, 18-12, for a 35-34 lead. The Falcons closed strong, carrying the fourth quarter, 25-16, for the key victory.

Derek Jones led the Falcons (5-6, 10-11) with 16 points. Christian Floyd added 10.

Brandon Mathews was the top scorer for Frazier (4-8, 12-9) with 14 points. Robert Gondura added 10.

Men’s basketball

Thomas More (Ky.) 105, Waynesburg 82 – Four Saints finished in double figures and 14-of-16 players scored at least one basket as the Yellow Jackets lost on the road in Kentucky in PAC action.

Thomas More improves to 8-3 in the conference and 12-10 overall, while Waynesburg falls to 2-10 in the PAC and 5-17 overall.

Daniel Whalen topped the Saints with 14 points. Todd Krohman and Colt Stafford both finished with 10.

Steve Iser scored a game-high 18 points for the Yellow Jackets. James Allenby finished with 16 and Jeff Young added 15.

Indiana (Pa.) 80, California (Pa.) 52 – The Crimson Hawks led 37-23 at the half, and kept up the pressure in the final 20 minutes for an important PSAC-West Conference victory over the visiting Vulcans.

Joe Swiech finished with a double-double for California (11-9, 4-4) with season-high 22 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Chad Tipton was also in double digits with 12 points.

Darryl Webb led the way for Indiana (15-5, 6-2) with 22 points. Webb was nearly perfect, making 6-of-7 field goal attempts and 10-of-12 free throws. Willi Estrella also had a strong outing, hitting 5-of-6 field goals and 6-of-8 free throws to finish with 16 points. Scooter Renkin added 12.

Women’s basketball

Indiana (Pa.) 60, California (Pa.) 57 – The Vulcans led 37-31 at the half, and extended their lead to nine points in the second half, but the Crimson Hawks used a 14-5 run to tie the game at 54-54 with four minutes left to set up a thrilling finish.

Indiana pulled ahead 58-57 with 1:14 remaining, and Lacey Claar’s two free throws in the final seconds secured the 3-point win.

Kayla Smith led California (15-6, 6-3) with 19 points. Danielle Luckett scored 15 and Ryah Gadson added 12.

Indiana (15-5, 7-1) had five players in double figures. Claar finished with a team-high 16 points. Brianna Johnson scored 14, and Katelyn Marshall, Eryn Withers and Sara Pastorek all finished with 10 points.

Thomas More (Ky.) 93, Waynesburg 65 – The visiting Yellow Jackets found out why the Saints are the top-ranked team in Division III with a PAC road loss in Kentucky. Thomas More led 51-21 at halftime.

Nicole Dickman led Thomas More (22-0, 13-0) with a game-high 21 points. Allison Long finished with 12 and Chelsea Tolliver added 11. The Saints had 13 players in the scoring column.

Hannah Hunter topped scorers for Waynesburg (16-6, 9-5) with 13 points. Elaine Hasek came off the bench to finish with 12, and Jessi Drayer added 10.
