Vulcans blank Charleston
The Vulcans used three freshmen pitchers Sunday morning to lead the California (Pa.) softball team to a 6-0 victory over Charleston (W.Va.) on the third day of the Saints Invitational hosted by Limestone (S.C.)
Kaitlyn Schilling started and earned the victory, improving to 2-0 after tossing a one-hitter with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Hope Spancake came on in relief and threw two scoreless innings, and Chelsea Carlson secured the final out of the game.
Natalie Wideman drove in the first run with an RBI single in the second inning. Danielle Easton scored on a throwing error in the top of the fourth, and added another run on Wideman’s RBI double in the sixth.
Waynesburg Central Alyson Johnson opened the seventh with a double and scored on Kristen McKenzie’s double. Easton drove home McKenzie with a single, and McKenzie came home on Wideman’s double.
California improves to 5-3 overall, while Charleston falls to 1-7.
